    STRIKE!

About thirty minutes ago 49,000 Chrysler employees and UAW members walked off the job.

It's the second strike of Michigan's biggest job producer in as many weeks.  But our state isn't worth paying attention to.  We don't have any real problems that need addressing, do we, Barack, Edwards, Richardson and Biden (and Denny too, it turns out).

Gotta love big labor and their BFFs at the DNC and MDP.

    Strike! (none / 0) (#1)

Like the strike on GM, this is simply a staged ploy by the UAW leadership to give thier retirees a feeling that they haven't been sold out in what will in a couple of days be agreed to.  UAW leadership knows that they have to finally correct some of the burden that somehow, neither they or management saw coming down the road, when past contracts granting rediculously unsustainable benefits were signed.  This will give enough of the retirees a warm, fuzzy feeling to get the contract ratified.  I'm not a particular fan of the unions, but Ron Gettlefinger at least recognizes that business as usual is over and the entitlement contracts are a thing of the past.  He must bend to the needs of the company to ensure survival, and at the same time, put up a "show of strength" to get his membership to swallow the changes.

    UAW strikers... (none / 0) (#2)

It never ceases to amaze me how rude UAW folks are.  I'm 1/4 mile away from the HQ and the UAW folks are blocking the roads and generally dancing in the streets.

And don't try to drive through a strike line with any foreign car, unless you like adding key-scratches to the paintjob.

The retirees don't vote in the unions - making political ploys for their benefit is useless.  And taking the workers to strike removes their paychecks in a hurting economy.  The UAW leadership isn't looking out for the workers - they're looking out for themselves.

And here goes another 10,000 potential jobs (none / 0) (#3)

I've asked Honda, Toyota, Subaru, etc etc people why Michigan doesn't even make the "long list", let alone the "short list" for new plants.

The simple answer?  They think the UAW is akin to the mafia, and they run everything up here.  They don't want any part of the UAW.

    Is Canadian healthcare (none / 0) (#5)

idoit.  Taxpayer run health care.  wiki canada medicare.  The best yet definition to taxpayer run system.  No drug coverage, denist, PT, eyes, dental, any many others are NOT covered like the states.  Thats why the cost is cheaper.  Also if your going to post an article please don't use the CBC, they are run and censored by the Canadian gov't.  Kind of like Liz Boyd censors Granholms interview.  Think of it in those terms.

    Marysville, OH isn't in Canada (none / 0) (#11)

Of course, I'm sure NoviDem went to public school and might not know that.

One of Honda's (and America's) better selling cars is made in Ohio, where they don't have socialized healthcare and an increasing tax burden.

I am a GM employee who took the 28 years pre-retirement offer. I will "offically" retire in 2008

Yes retirees DO vote on the contract

GM has built its only new plants in the US in 20 years right here in Lansing area, Lansing Grand River & the Delta Plant and the products produced by these plants are hot sellers

Chrysler and GM face different problems and GM is in a better position to compromise

This will probably be a longer strike

a 90 day supply of cars and trucks on their lots they should sit out any negotiations for a while and then come back to the UAW and tell them that, "they take what we offer or we'll move out of state and take our jobs someplace else."  Somehow I think the UAW would get the message that Chrysler can't be bullied.

    Hmmmm appears I was wrong

Wonder if Chrysler gave everything to get rid of health care also?

DETROIT --  The United Auto Workers union said Wednesday it reached a tentative four-year contract agreement with Chrysler LLC after a daylong strike that sent thousands of workers to the picket lines.

Details of the agreement weren't immediately available. UAW President Ron Gettelfinger said the strike would end immediately and workers should report for their next available shift.

Running Odds at Ford... (none / 0) (#17)

So, is there odds on how long the strike will be at Ford...I believe they will strike, go out for lunch and cocktails, walk back in and have a deal by 1 PM.
