Dean confronts student over Gary Peters FOIA request

    The Peters Report on RightMichigan.com

Central Michigan University Dean Pamela Gates tried to refuse a Freedom of Information Act request today and after learning she had to accept the request pertaining to Democratic congressional candidate Gary Peters, she became aggressive and the video camera of a student recording the incident.

Gates heads the College of Humanities and Social and Behavorial Sciences, which includes the Political Science Department - where Peters serves as a temporary assistant professor. The FOIA request complied with Michigan law and sought among other things "access to and/or copies of every e-mail sent and received" by Gates "concerning Professor Gary Peters."

Under Michigan law, CMU has five days to respond to the request for Gates' records.

    Context (none / 0) (#3)

This video, sans context; and the previous one of the student baiting Peters in the dark parking lot erodes the student group's credibility, and that of RightMichigan for blogging it. The students have legitimate questions that deserve answers. The "gotcha" video clips add no substance to the issue, and gives the entire debate a sophomoric feel. IMO, the students would be better served by putting the camera and the YouTube account away and driving hard through the FOIA and other public forums to get their questions answered.

    Respect? (none / 0) (#4)

Wow. That's a student talking to a dean like that? I guess respect is not one of your priorities. I sure would like to see more than 10 seconds of this video. I guess you're lucky she didn't kick your butt. This is partisan politics at its worst from a borderline hate group.

It took me 2 seconds online to determine where you are supposed to file FOIA requests at Central. It's not at Pamela Gates office. Minus 5 points to you for laziness.

(har har) but something like that could only benefit from context.  SAGP would in fact be well served to provide a much more complete recording of the encounter.

That said, it looks like the Dean assaulted him.  I don't care how mouthy he was or how disrespectful... a Dean cannot assault a student.  Period.  Exclamation point.

Yep!  The Dean assaulted the student.

    Tact... (none / 0) (#11)
by DanaP on Tue Oct 16, 2007 at 09:27:24 AM EST
    Ok, my 2 cents...

It is outrageous that the Dean of all people would show such great disrespect such as that.  As a top tier personnel of the college, they are to be held at a higher standard of conduct and show the kids, by example.  The way she "reacted" was uncalled for.

Having said that, I think that by directly confronting her, and not going through the regular means of FOIA requests, coupled with the fact that it was on camera only exacerbated the situation.

Always easy to say "shoulda coulda" when your not the one doing the work ;-)

    Her office?? (none / 0) (#19)
by Energizer19 on Tue Oct 16, 2007 at 11:33:15 AM EST
The dean says "Get out of my office", but...is it really her office? I sincerely doubt she's paying property taxes on it, and she doesn't have a deed for it in her name, so what makes it her office? Does she have squatter's rights on it? It's the same as any office at any workplace: it actually belongs to the employer; in the case of a public employee, this would, of course, be the taxpayer. So...can she really, in good faith, kick a taxpayer out of "her" office? I don't think so. What I see in her reaction is the same basic mentality that's held by Gary Peters, and so many other public employees: the absurd idea that they actually own everything loaned to them by the taxpayers. As they say, "finders, keepers; losers, weepers."

    Shoddy reporting (none / 0) (#21)
by Communications Guru on Tue Oct 16, 2007 at 02:09:08 PM EST
That is the worst "reporting" I have ever seen. "Cleary assaulted a student?" It should be more like an alleged assault. I saw her arm move forward and the camera shack. I hope they get sued for that shoddy reporting. Judging by the way Lennox filmed the report off the TV set he has a shaky hand anyway. CMU gets the award for the biggest understatement, "...is a person who has an agenda and is pursuing it." You think?

But it rivals the reporter's description of YAF, "Often called controversial." A better description is, often called a hate group, and the chapter at MSU is a hate group.

Then the anchor says to see the uncut video go their "TV5 Uncut Video," and it takes you to this guy's blog. There's an unbiased source. Still, all you see are those 10 seconds. The good news is he claims he's pressing charges. I hope that's true.

Democrats supporting the Dean on this one - because it's their guy (Tiny Peters) that's involved.

I'm surprised they're not fighting for "the little guy" - maybe because the little guy is a conservative?

So much for Democrat's concern for the little guy.  They'll stand with the "big institutions" when it suits their agenda.

    Lets refocus..... (none / 0) (#28)

We have a video of a CMU administrator swatting a camera. This is serious. I think charges should be brought against her. She was presented with a request, she refused to take it, a camera was pulled out to record her noncompliance and she got violent. You guys can defend her all you want, but I want to know just what exactly she is hiding. Perhaps she should make a statement and clear everything up for us.

August 4, while speaking at the YearlyKos convention in Chicago

And I quote:  "We are certainly better prepared and more focused on, you know, taking our arguments, and making them effective, and disseminating them widely, and really putting together a network, uh, in the blogosphere, in a lot of the new progressive infrastructure, institutions that I helped to start and support like Media Matters and Center for American Progress. "

These are words out of Hillary's mouth, kind of tough to defend.  I don't know who to believe, you sir or Hillary.

Talking Points: Bill O'Realy, umm Tom Imus, just off the top of my head.  Not to mention Rush Limbaugh.  MM speaks and Hillary, the rest of the socialist democratic wing follow.  Those are called talking points.  Top to bottom, left to right.  Words make sentances.  Go to college?  GED?  Not sure?  I understand.

fire a Dean for committing battery on a student?

Yes. Confused by your writing (none / 0) (#46)
by Communications Guru on Wed Oct 17, 2007 at 05:40:11 PM EST
First, where's the link to the quote? At Media Matters, they not only have a link, they have a transcript and video and audio. Even if she did say it, I don't see what it proves. Michigan has a number of progressive and liberal blogs, but Sen. Clinton had absolutely nothing to do with it. I am happy to see she helped start and supports those two blogs, so did many other people and they continue to support them.

Again, your third paragraph is beyond comprehension. I suggest you take a writing course.

awww SNAP!@  Take a writing course, fo' shizzle.

So Media Matters and C.A.P. are just blogs?  Nothing more than that?

Boy, the lefties and the CommieGuru-based-Media sure put a lot of stock into what a couple of "blogs" have to say.

We can rest easy knowing that Hillary Clinton has her hand up the butt of a puppet blog like Media Matters!
