WARNING: Dems attempting another new tax hike -- T-minus 5 Days until Government Shutdown

No, you didn't misread the headline.  The Democrats in Lansing apparently aren't satisfied with a nearly $1.4 BILLION tax hike and are moving to raise taxes again and to bury them in the "cuts" portion of the 10/1/07 budget agreement.

You'll remember that the Dems agreed to make a few cuts before November 1st.  Of course, they haven't.  And now word comes that they'd very much like to avoid the cuts when at all possible.  According to the Detroit News:

Sources familiar with closed-door negotiations reported advances Thursday, but no final deal on the outstanding sticking points, including privatizing foster care, slicing money from disease prevention programs and raising hunting and fishing license fees.

The governor's office, the Democratic state House and the Republican Senate must agree to an additional $430 million in cuts to balance the state's books and avoid another partial shutdown of government services.

This at the same time that the Governor rejects calls from Congressman Pete Hoekstra to reexamine hundreds of thousands of dollars of new state spending on a turtle fence.

More taxes so that we can buy fences for turtles.  Oh, and to pay for special gifts to the city of Detroit.  Items like:

$12 million for the Detroit Zoo, $10 million for the Detroit Institute of Arts and $1.9 million for the Detroit Historical Museum.

And on top of it all, we're now only 5 days away from a government shutdown.  The second in a month.

    Read on...

    It's now been:

    289 DAYS since Dillon said:

"We are facing a budget shortfall this current fiscal year in excess of $500 million and next year's is in excess of $3 billion. Bottom line: We have a lot of work to do...

"We did this in anticipation of the looming budget crisis and the need for us to roll up our sleeves and get to work immediately."

Journal of the House, Jan. 10, 2007, pgs. 22-23

154 DAYS since the Democrat controlled House followed the Senate GOP lead on cuts, reforms and accounting changes that balanced the FY2007 budget without raising taxes.  An imperfect budget fix but one that closed the books, didn't steal a dime from taxpayers and avoided the governor's proposed cuts to education and Medicaid that would have caused schools to close early and people to "die" (the governor's words).

148 DAYS since the Democrat controlled House closed shop entirely to head up to Mackinac island for fudge, carriage rides and time on the porch of the Grand Hotel, wrapping up a period of time when they worked two of eleven days.  Looking back to the week immediately preceding this particular hiatus we find the Memorial Day weekend.  When you lay it all out in order the Democrat controlled House has done the following (taking into account their most recent vacation):

Four day Memorial Day weekend (Friday, May 25 through Monday, May 28)

Two day work week (Tuesday and Wednesday, May 29 and 30)

Five day weekend on Mackinac Island (Thursday, May 31 through Monday, June 4)

9 out of 12 days off because... why not? (Thursday, July 19 through Monday, July 30)

Working one day a week in the month of August (5 days total)

115 DAYS since the Senate GOP and House Dems agreed on a replacement for the hated Single Business Tax, clearing the legislative agenda to tackle the $1.19 billion FY2008 budget "deficit."

65 DAYS since the House Democrat majority approved "budget" bills in essence promising the state would print it's own money, spending $2 billion more than best-case projected revenues.

30 DAYS since House Majority Floor Leader Steve Tobocman said: "In the long term, I think perhaps a shutdown would bring people to the table that have been unwilling to put forth any ideas whatsoever to solve this crisis."  Trying to protect his party leadership is he?

26 DAYS since Jennifer Granholm and Andy Dillon shutdown state government to ram through a nearly $1.4 BILLION tax hike, the biggest in the history of the state of Michigan.

24 DAYS since Andy Dillon told the Detroit News of the $1.4 billion tax-hike agreement: "Basically, this entire package was delivered by Democrats."

Now it's only 5 DAYS until they shutdown state government again!  Well, unless Chris Ward and Valde Garcia want to cave (again) to help the Democrats build their fancy turtle fence by raising taxes (again).

    Fees, Continuation Budget (none / 0) (#2)
by Calhoun Kid on Fri Oct 26, 2007 at 09:44:30 PM EST
If Senate Republicans allow new fees for either the DNR or DEQ or allow another month of a continuation budget for these two bloated departments, I'm done supporting our Republican leadership.  It's time to start cutting, not time to increase spending.  Nick, please promise me this won't happen and you won't stand by Bishop if he allows it!
