No Wonder We Have to Raise TuitionBy amanda zaluckyj, Section News
For those of you that haven't been keeping up on your Right Michigan readings, which is the equivalent of living under a rock, you may or may not have heard about Gary Peters. If you haven't heard about him yet, click here or here (the Students Against Gary Peters official blog) to catch up.
Basically, the gist is this: Gary Peters, a professor at Central Michigan University, is running for congress. Meanwhile, he is getting a salary paid of over $2,000 an hour by the taxpayers of Michigan...even though he's spending his time campaigning Peters is also trying to spin quite a web of lies to protect himself. As reported yesterday on RM, right here. If you think this is ridiculous, keep reading...
Does anyone else find it odd that CMU has enough money to pay this guy over $2,000 an hour for the work he does (or doesn't do), yet they had to raise tuition for incoming freshman students by 21%?
The Michigan taxpayers are paying this guy big bucks to spend most of his time campaigning for office. Peters doesn't think that's fair either. At least didn't use to think so. On July 13, he said on Off the Record: "I certainly think from an ethical standpoint you should not be a public official, you should step down once you file with the FEC that you are a candidate for Congress. You should not be an employee of the state of Michigan. I feel pretty strongly about that from an ethical standpoint." Apparently his ethics are slipping as of late. He finds nothing wrong with pocketing lots of money from Michigan moms and dads while running for office. Nor does he find anything wrong with lying about what he is doing either. Perhaps the problem with our universities isn't a lack of funding. Perhaps it is an abundance of corruption that is plaguing us. Peters next move is to host a policy forum next week during the CMU v. WMU football game. Clearly, Peters doesn't want a lot of students to attend, which seems pretty irresponsible and counterproductive. Expected to participate in the forum? Senator Mike Bishop and Representative Craig DeRoche (along with our favorite Senator Andy Dillon!). Attending the forum seems to be an endorsement of Peters work. Are Bishop and DeRoche ready to step up and denounce the actions taken by the part-time professor, part-time congressional candidate? I guess we'll find out. In the meantime, I encourage Students Against Gary Peters to keep up the good work!
