GVSU Moves to Limit Free Speech for a Christian?

I used to think that the Constitution of the United States ruled over all parts of the country, not just certain zones that university administrators deemed ok.

    Man, was I wrong!

Grand Valley has "free speech zones" that someone at some point has declared as places in which the First Amendment actually prevails.  As the legend goes, the zones were originally created when "Preacher Jim" would set up on campus and preach his "Hell and damnation to all" message.

Well, this time "Preacher Michael" has made his way onto campus to spread a similar message.  Except this time, he's following all the rules. He stands in a free speech zone. He reserves the space from the university. And he preaches his message.

Not everyone at GVSU can handle this though. In fact, some students were so angry by what he had to say that they organized a protest of the man.  They are rude to him. They yell at him. They try and stop him from speaking. You get the point...

Now don't get me wrong, I don't agree with what the guy is saying. In fact, I think he's dead wrong, but that really isn't the point. He does have the right to speak, on a taxpayer-funded university and say what he wants (free speech zone or not, but I digress...).

You probably won't believe what the GVSU Student Senate is considering though...

According to my contact on the Student Senate, several senators are considering a resolution that would ban the "crazy preacher" from campus. Since Preacher Michael offended some students he apparently has to go.

Yep, that's right -- they want to stop this guy from exercising his constitutional right at a university that his tax dollars helped to fund. (Click here to find the leadership's email if you find this atrocious).

    Ironic; no?

Since the Student Senate at GVSU had decided that they're going to pick and choose who can be on campus based on what offends a select group of students, I would like to pass along the list of things I think they should ban. And, mind you, most of these do not take place in designated "zones."

    1.    Voices for Healthy Choices: The group on campus that promotes the murder of innocent babies. I find this highly offensive, so I believe Student Senate should ban them.

    2.    The Office of Multi-Cultural Affairs: Yep, offensive. Ban them!

    3.    Professor [insert name here]: I don't enjoy being told horrible things about my beliefs in every class, which I pay for by the way. How about we ban those professors?

    4.    President of GVSU T. Haas: I found it offensive that he promised to use my tuition dollars to litigate against the Michigan Civil Rights Initiative. Please, ban him.

    5.    The College Democrats: This one is just obvious. I move to ban them. Do I hear a second?

Seriously, if they're going to start banning people or groups because they offend certain students, they need to at least be consistent.

In the meantime, let us hope that they do the right thing and stand up for free speech and rights promised to us in the United States Constitution....and endowed to us by our Creator ( -- but don't tell them I said that!)

While the GVSU Student Senate is at it, they should just come clean and change their name to the GVSU Reichstag.

Next thing you know, the GVSU Senate will vote to replace the Stars and Stripes with the Nazi Hakenkreuz.

Please update us when the GVSU Senate votes to build a big bonfire for the burning of all written material deemed offensive by the Hitler Jungen Senators.
