Primary ShannahanigansBy Nick, Section News
And so it begins. We started to see and hear reports last weekend about the likelihood of Democrats switching teams for Michigan's January 15th primary to attempt to wreak a little havoc for the GOP a la John McCain's upset win in 2000. A Detroit area Democrat Representative told Lansing insider publication MIRS that though he'd endorsed Barack Obama for President he was likely going to vote for Ron Paul in thirty-five days in an effort to embarrass the Republican Party.
Now those stories have moved past the insider publications and hit the broader MSM. The Detroit News reports this morning on the potential for troublemaking and the options presented to Democrats who've been flipped the bird repeatedly by their own slate of candidates. Remember, Obama, Edwards, Biden and Richardson asked that their names be stricken from the primary ballot in Michigan and even Hillary Clinton, now all but guaranteed a win, patently refuses to ask for a single vote. So what's a lefty to do?
"We want every eligible Democratic voter in Michigan to vote in the Jan. 15, 2008, Democratic presidential primary," said state Democratic Chairman Mark Brewer. While I normally wouldn't trust Mark Brewer as far as I could throw him (don't get me wrong, I'm a pretty tough guy but Mark's not exactly slim) he may actually have a rooting interest in ensuring the Dems vote Dem. Remember, when the Michigan Supreme Court overturned the lower court ruling that at one point tossed out Michigan's primary they wound up leaving the law on the books as-is (or as-was). Meaning, the State Parties will get the voter lists of everyone who puts their name on the dotted line and requests a partisan ballot. The ID value of those lists is potentially huge. If the lefties all cross over and ask for a GOP ballot the Dems suddenly lose a huge update for their 08 turnout list. And if information is ammunition that's a lot of military grade explosive they're not going to be seeing. Still, I can't but help daydream about the possibilities of jumping ship myself and leading an effort to screw up Hillary's big win. She's counting on it but she isn't running unopposed. Technically. And suddenly I realize... Mike Gravel never looked so good:
Power to the peoooooooople. Just not in Michigan, right DNC?
