URGENT ACTION ALERT: House Democrats voting to raise taxes AGAIN... TODAY!

The Governor and her spokespeople have been all over the MSM these past couple weeks promising us that the tax hikes are over.  She'll never raise taxes again, she says.  It's just "too hard."  In fact, just yesterday her spokesman, Liz Boyd told Lansing insider publication Gongwer:

"Ms. Granholm is committed to making cuts and reforms in order to trim costs rather than raising taxes."

Only fair to ask then... why hasn't she reigned in Andy Dillon, George Cushingberry and the Democrats in the Michigan House of Representatives?

Dillon's tax-hike caucus is expected to hold a vote TODAY to impose a new tax on every phone line in the State of Michigan.  It's tough to get a good read on the precise amount they'll actually look to move because the Democrats aren't exactly shouting about this one from every rooftop.  Reports vary between fifty-five cents per line to closer to a dollar.

If you've got a phone and you don't think you should have to shell out an extra buck on your next bill then now's the time to pick it up and start dialing.  We're talking rotary phones, touchtone phones, cell phones, voice-over-IP phones.  You name it, the Democrats are going to try to tax it today.

Please take a moment to email and telephone your Representative (click here) and tell them that enough is enough.  Tell them to vote NO on the Democrats' new tax hike!

    tax IP telephony? (none / 0) (#1)

As an I professional, I'm curious as to how IP phones would be taxed.

I mean, does this mean that every phone whose public IP address is registered to an entity based in Michigan?  Or is this just a tax on where the handset resides?  Or...?

Another example on how the Dems tax first and ask questions later.

And you make an excellent point.  Libs would have to tax cable companies like comcast, charter, chartermi, wow, etc.. that offer voice over IP services.  Libs would have to sue cable companies to turn over IP info on every MI resident (which libs are capable of).

Republicain responze with in 2 hours.
Democrate (Mr Dillon) has not yet, nor do I expext him to, BUT I desided to post Rep Pastor comments to me.

"Thank you for your correspondence regarding SB 410 - SB 411which would add a monthly fee on each land line, cell, and internet phone.  Your views are important to me and allow me to better represent Livonia in the Legislature.

These bills originally passed the Senate in an effort to create a tiered funding system and assess a surcharge on all devices capable of accessing 9-1-1. The bills as passed in the Senate, were revenue neutral and replaced the current $0.29 charge on land-lines with a $0.19 charge distributed on all telecommunication devices with 9-1-1 access.  It is important to note, SB 410 and SB 411 were intended to stabilize 9-1-1 funding across the State of Michigan.

    (And now the kicker)
Unfortunately, when the House Appropriations passed SB 410 - SB 411 they added a $0.62 tax on phone lines, collected by the new Public Safety Fund.  It is believed that this new tax will generate a total of $78.8 million in additional revenue in the first year.

I believe this fee would make the telecommunications industry less competitive in Michigan compared to other states.  In addition, higher fees would be difficult for many families and businesses who are already struggling to pay their bills in Michigan's lagging economy.   This fee would add up very quickly for large families with several cell phones or businesses with multiple phone lines.

Again, I do support necessary law enforcement programs, but believe we must restructure government to find more efficiencies so that these programs can be funded from the General Fund, not by raising fees on phone service.

If there is anything further I can do please feel free to contact my office.  Thank you again for sharing your thoughts.

    Sincerely,

    State Rep. John R. Pastor
    19th District"
