Is there ONE Democrat willing to stand up for Michigan?By Nick, Section News
How much do Michigan Democrats care about Michigan these days? That's a good question. And one to which I really don't know the answer. But I do know that on a scale of one to ten they're somewhere around a negative thirteen. We've got this whole Presidential Primary debacle in which the leading candidates for the Democrat's nomination have sworn off even stepping foot in Michigan. A huge two fisted, two fingered salute.
Michigan Democrats' response? Silence. We've got the leading contenders for the nomination taking their names off the ballot so Michigan residents won't even have the CHANCE to vote for them. Michigan Democrats' response? Crickets chirping. We've got the candidates jockeying to see which one can promise to do more damage to the domestic auto industry and one candidate in particular with a personal political background at the forefront of the movement towards NAFTA and CAFTA, the issue on which Jennifer Granholm based her entire smear campaign of Dick DeVos during last year's gubernatorial election. Same thing they blasted the guy on day after day with more hate and vitriol than I've ever seen in Michigan politics and their leading candidate doesn't just agree with the positions they attacked, she was a global leader in the fight to make them real. Michigan Democrats' response? The Governor actually ENDROSED the Queen of NAFTA! Now we've got this energy bill. An energy bill that's expected to cost the Big 3, each of them a Michigan company, well over $100 billion in compliance costs, expected to add $5,000 to the cost of every automobile on top of any other price increases that might come along and may, according to some analysts, send one of Michigan's largest employers spiraling into bankruptcy. Michigan Democrats' response? Their elected officials voted for it and the grassroots? The union workers? The regressisphere? Dead quiet. Not a peep. And how about this one for the icing on the cake. When the Democrats finally obtained their "victory" on this energy bill they sent the thing to the White House for a signature. In a Prius. For the uninitiated, that's a Japanese hybrid. Not an American hybrid. They sent an energy bill that regulates the domestic auto industry to the White House in a Japanese car. Read on...
It's bad enough we have Clinton, Hussein Obama, Edwards and their ilk flipping us the bird, but now we've got Nancy Pelosi and Michigan's Democrat Congressional delegation joining in the fun?
The Republican response? Much better... reports the Associated Press:
Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Mich., called it a "slap in the face of every American auto worker." And the difference is just as stark among the Presidential contenders where Republicans make Michigan a regular campaign stop. Which pays dividends, by the way. While the Democrats' contest is all technically settled the race for the GOP nomination remains hotly contested and volatile with new polling numbers out in today's Detroit News. Looks like all those visits from Mitt Romney and the huge national media push of Mike Huckabee have propelled them up the ladder this week but things are far from settled. Michigan couldn't be any more important and the candidates know that. We can expect to see and hear a lot more from them in the next three weeks leading up to the primary. Assuming we'll hear anything over that deafening silence coming from Michigan Democrats. Wait a second... there is some news that may bring them out of hibernation. How long before we hear or read them praising the news that Michigan's unemployment rate is currently only 7.4%?
