Fire Up the Wood Burning Stove and Get the Horse and Buggy Ready

The future of energy in Michigan has been a hot topic of conversation over the last year. Consumers Energy and Detroit Edison are pushing to repeal the deregulation of energy; therefore eliminating competition. This is just one more way to take away free market competition and increase the already high prices of electricity.

In the last  week , The Michigan Land Use Institute (MLUI) and their new-found coalition has taken us back 100 years. They are making false claim after false claim regarding the proposed coal plants across the state.

Even the holier-than-thou 21st Century Energy plan stated that Michigan will need at least one base line plant capable of producing at least 500 megawatts of power. LS Power, an out of state company willing to make serious investments in Michigan, has already proposed a 750 -megawatt power plant be built in Midland. They are currently talking with the community and officials regarding rezoning the land. The plant will create as many as 1,200 construction jobs that would equal a payroll of more than $200 million. The plant would also bring 100 permanent jobs to Michigan, but it appears the MLUI would prefer to drive jobs out of the state. The Governor must have taught them that.

Without these baseline plants, there will be a shortage of energy in Michigan leading to even higher energy costs, but I'm sure like so much else, the MLUI didn't think of that either. I also am sure that they are not aware of the new technology implemented in coal plants today that makes them much cleaner than the ones that already exist in Michigan. LS Power has committed to using the newest technology.

My question is that if the Michigan Land Use Institute is condemning coal plants, what exactly do they support? Nuclear energy? Or perhaps a shortage of energy is a better option for them. We better fire up the wood burning stoves and get the horse and buggy ready because if we take their advice , we will be reverting back 100 years.
