Dem Rep. Robert Dean (GR, 75): I Support Tax and Spend Scheme!

In a prepared statement, freshman state Representative Robert Dean (D, 75) threw his support firmly behind Granholm's tax and spend vision for the next budget cycle.  Local WOOD TV 8 reports the good Reverend as saying:

"I applaud Gov. Granholm for presenting a bold plan to get our state moving in the right direction again.  Only by working together can we find creative solutions to the challenges facing our working families.  The time to act is now."

Bold plan?  I'll say!  Claiming to face a $3.5 billion budget deficit and trying to fix it with at least 17 new government programs is bold.  Running your deficit well over $4 billion in the next year alone is bold.  Offering less than a billion dollars in spending cuts and increased efficiency is bold, especially when following up that pledge with another to raise taxes to pay for the rest.  Yep.  A $3 billion tax increase is bold!

I don't know why I expected better. I guess I just haven't learned my lesson yet. I thought going into last night's speech that there might actually be a sense of urgency. That the governor was smart enough to realize all of the talk about sunshine and roses wasn't going to work this time through... that it was time to get down to business. And then to compound my own silliness, I thought maybe, just maybe, people like Dean would take a stand and say 'you know what, nope, I'm not passing along the biggest tax increase in the history of the planet to MY constituents! I'm going to stand up and actually fight to get this mess under control. Not exacerbate it!'

Now THAT would have been bold!

But at least now I know. You can go ahead and write it down, folks. It was 37 days into the new term before Dean and his new friends in Lansing looked down on the rest of us and said 'we're not fixing the problem, you are. Give us your wallets. And don't make any sudden movements.'
