Presented with an opportunity to demonstrate leadership in the face of Michigan's greatest fiscal crisis, Jennifer Granholm on Tuesday night instead took the podium and delivered a divisive, campaign style speech full of what the FREEP called "glass is half full" rhetoric and happy talk.

And people across the state agree, wrong speech, wrong tone, wrong time.

FREEP concluded its analysis with this tasty morsel:

Presented with an opportunity to demonstrate leadership in the face of Michigan's greatest fiscal crisis, Jennifer Granholm on Tuesday night instead took the podium and delivered a divisive, campaign style speech full of what the FREEP called "glass is half full" rhetoric and happy talk.

And people across the state agree, wrong speech, wrong tone, wrong time.

FREEP concluded its analysis with this tasty morsel:
"She closed the speech with an impassioned plea for legislators to forget politics and find a "common commitment to Michigan that must guide you at this moment of decision."
Unfortunately, there is little chance of that happening -- as Granholm herself demonstrated Tuesday night."

How about this from FREEP's editorial page?

"Gov. Jennifer Granholm left an awful lot of shoes undropped during Tuesday's State of the State speech. Her important rallying cry was remarkably lacking on the specifics required to dig Michigan out of its budget hole."

George Bullard chimed in with this:

"Gov. Jennifer Granholm loaded her State of the State speech with new programs including free college for certain people and mandatory kindergarten for the crayon set.  Two chickens in every pot.  Who's gonna pay?  We are."

And the DetNews editorial is just scathing:

"This is not a time in Michigan for catchy slogans and feel-good programs. Yet that's mostly what we heard from Gov. Jennifer Granholm Tuesday in her State of the State message. And a promise to raise taxes...
...These are all no-brainers. Reformers have been calling for them for years. Many local governments are already merging fire departments, sharing police and fire dispatch, giving patrol contracts to sheriffs instead of maintaining local police departments and trying to be more frugal.
The governor spoke about many of these items during her first term, but she didn't do anything concrete to make them happen. By her inaction until now, Granholm allowed a fiscal crisis to become a catastrophe...
...If Granholm raises taxes, she won't have a "No Worker Left Behind" program, because in this state, there will be no workers left."

Maybe best of all, the governor's own pollster, fast-Eddy Sarpolous is quoted in the Oakland Press coverage piece titled:"Local Leaders Fear New Taxes:"

“But Lansing pollster Ed Sarpolus of EPIC-MRA said Granholm missed an opportunity by not addressing a replacement for the Single Business Tax and the $3 billion revenue hole the state faces.

"If you don't address it in your State of the State, it's quite surprising," Sarpolus said. "She's missing an opportunity to lead."

And these are just the early editions.  Can't wait to see what the out-state papers have to say after being told their communities are going to have to restructure to the tune of nearly a billion dollars while Lansing continues skipping down the path to insolvency, apparently oblivios to the fact that their own financial house is burning in the background.

Granholm has not helped but rather hindered our economy. She talks nice, but we need a leader, not an orater. Tuesday, she only proved her qualifications for the latter of the two.
