Cushingberry trial under way... House budget process languishes as Approps put on hold

Opening statements started today in the perjury trial of Detroit area Democrat and House Appropriations Chairman George Cushingberry.

He faces two felony charges and if convicted could serve up to five years in prison in addition to financial penalties.

So what's happening back in the old House of Representatives, where the good Representative chairs the committee where budgets are hashed out, debated and settled on?

Well those committee meetings are currently on hold.  It's tough to have them when your chairman's sitting in a courtroom because he's on trial!

Meanwhile, Andy Dillon continues to remove Cushingberry from his committee assignments or censure him in any other way.  Not even a public reprimand.

Some on the left will be quick to point the finger back at the GOP and say "hey, what about Rep. Garfield?  He's been arrested for drinking and driving!"  And they'd be right.  That's why Minority Leader Craig DeRoche sent a formal letter to Dillon asking him to remove Garfield from his committee assignments.  And it wasn't an "if and only if" sorta request.  No strings attached.  He wants Garfield off his committees.

Didn't the House Dems say something earlier in the year about bringing ethics back to Lansing?

The committee structure is made in such a way that if the Chairman is indisposed, the Vice Chair steps in.  I know State Legislature doesn't use Robert's Rules, but I can't imagine their form is too much different.

I'm glad to see the Democrats stepping up and leading.  We have a budget crisis... a crisis we keep being reminded by the Democrats could shutdown the government.

Elections have consequences.  Is our consequence a state government that can't run itself day-to-day?  And add insult to injury... we're asked to pay more for this ineffective government?

I'm not so concerned if Cushingberry is guilty or innocent yet.  But I'm reminded of Tom DeLay, and how he stepped down when he was indicted.  As much as I thought the charges were bogus, I think it was the right thing for him to do.

Elections have consequences.  So do felonies and misdemeaners.  Let's move forward with governing the state in an adult manner.

I understand that the jury was suppose to get this case today, has anyone heard if they did or not?
