Being a friend of the Granholm administration pays... literally

The FREEP yesterday took a page from Lansing insider publication MIRS yesterday and highlighted the problem of former legislators and good old boys getting high paying jobs in the Jennifer Granholm administration.  But the word in Lansing right now is that cronyism in hiring practices is extending beyond former legislative candidates and may now have led to a violation of civil service guidelines to benefit a Dem activist.

    Read on...

If you don't subscribe to MIRS, the long and short of the former legislator hirings is this... if you ran for the legislature last year as a Democrat and lost you probably have a job somewhere in Michigan Government thanks to Jennifer Granholm.

That's not to say that only Dems have found gainful employment in the bureaucracy.  Laura Toy and Mike Goschka are two Republicans who are no longer in the Senate but still draw a paycheck from the tax payers.  But the GOP list pales in comparison with the Dems.

And many of these Dem losers (no pun intended) are making more cake now than they would have had they won their elections, often well over $80K (Toy and Goschka are at $65K).

Andy Levin, Carl Williams, Alexander Lipsey, Julie Dennis, Bob Emerson, Rich Brown, Mike Murphy, Chris Kolb and Bill McConico are all former candidates or members of the legislature and are well taken care of right now (though McConico only makes $35,000 working for freshman Rep. Bert "What's a Driver's License" Johnson).

Mark Slavens, another unsuccessful candidate, is also in the mix for a judicial appointment.

Add now to the mix Leo Lalonde, Democrat contributor, Democrat National Committee newsletter consultant and a former staff spokesman for the Michigan Department of Corrections.

While we hear constant bellyaching (all justified, mind you) from the Governor and her spokesmen and friends at the Capitol about a budget crunch, any hope or expectation of a promised hiring freeze seems to have gone out the window.  Lalonde is now working as a recruiter for health care workers for the state.  No word on what experience (if any) he has recruiting health care workers.

Even more egregious is that this particular friend of the administration got to bypass Civil Service guidelines.  The job, you see, was never posted.  So now, instead of working as an at-will political employee he's got a cushy job that's officially classified.  He's there for the long haul.

Of course this begs the question... if folks in Lansing are aware of this one example how many more examples are out there waiting to be discovered?  If the long list of former legislative candidates is any indication there's plenty of cronyism to go around.

Are you claiming that all of those people:

"ran for the legislature last year as a Democrat and lost"

    That's not good... (5.00 / 1) (#2)

    Violating civil service guidelines?

Wait for it... I'm sure within three posts we'll have Commie Guru defend it by saying "Engler did this once, so that makes it all okay."  It's always someone else's fault, right?

Our Governor needs all the help she can get.  I guess I can't blame her - political advancement is more important to her than fixing the state.  She can't run for re-election.  She can't run for President.  Without her political friends, what would she have to look forward to?

    You're right... (5.00 / 1) (#3)

I didn't say they'd all lost but I could see how it could be read that way.

I've made a clarification in the story.

    Good catch.

    that's what I'm telling you.

Well, that's what MIRS reported.  I can't for the life of me think of another...

    Where's the outrage (5.00 / 1) (#6)

I thought she had a hiring freeze on for state government.  I guess she lives by the old adage - do as I say, not as I do.

She's done a pretty good job of importing the old Wayne County cronyism politics to Lansing.

She's just using the state budget (funded by taxpayers) as her personal piggy bank.

    Why the surprise (none / 0) (#7)

she was a Mcnamara sycophant and learned how to manipulate the system so she can take care of friends.  This is just one of the reasons why government can't be trusted with our money and why we need a P/T legislature.

    hahah... well... (none / 0) (#8)

    I wouldn't say it's a surprise, Conspiracy.

But I think it's important to keep folks feet to the fire on this stuff.  Just because we expect cronyism and corruption and favor peddling doesn't mean it's alright.

I know you're not arguing that point, just reminding some of our other readers... and they know who they are. :)

    c'mon now (none / 0) (#9)

Jeremy... what's with the Commie Guru impersonation? :)
