Interesting email floating around the Capitol...

Click below for more to read an awfully interesting email Andy Dillon's chief communications guy Dan Farough sent to his caucus members yesterday afternoon.

Having worked for a while in one of these communications shops (for the good guys, not the bad guys) I can tell you messages like this are rare and always speak to a larger issue.

Was Dillon getting serious heat from the boys and girls in his caucus over this iPod snafu?  Sure seems that way.

Farough claims that they've "ended" the controversy too, which is interesting.  Especially since his boss ducked his own press conference, hasn't told the press or anyone else for that matter WHY it's important to pay Apple back for the trip their lobbyist took him on earlier this year (if they didn't do anything wrong then why the need to return the money?) or why a press conference last week that promised to offer the Democrats "plan" to fix the budget has been spun and respun and spun again by his communications shop until they've stopped referring to it as a plan and now call it a vision.

Of course, if a vision is all we've heard from Dillon so far he's REALLY behind the 8 ball.

No matter what way you look at it... from an email like this to vulnerable freshmen Dems distancing themselves from the iPod "vision" by calling it "misguided" and saying things like "I'm independent and I disagree" with my caucus, all is not well in Andy Dillon land.

    Representatives,

Two Ipod stories below from our press conference today to end the controversy.

    Schoolchildren won't get iPods

Michigan legislators won't be giving away iPods to schoolchildren, and said Thursday they never intended to in the first place.

In addition, three House Democrats who were guests of iPod maker Apple in California earlier this year will reimburse the company $1,700 each in order to end a controversy that has gotten "out of control," said state Rep. Tim Melton, D-Auburn Hills.

Melton said widespread reports that House Democrats were proposing to spend $38 million on iPods for every Michigan public school child were based on a misunderstanding of comments made by Rep. Matthew Gillard, D-Alpena at a news conference last week.

The proposal is to promote the use of technology generally and isn't linked to any specific technology, Melton said.

Melton said he and Gillard and Speaker Andy Dillon, D-Redford Township, decided to cover the cost of their March trip to California, paid for by Apple, because media reports about the iPods and the trip were becoming a "distraction" from work on the state budget crisis.

Michigan students won't get iPods; lawmakers will repay Apple for trip

LANSING -- Three Michigan lawmakers who took a trip to California last month paid for by Apple Inc. to learn about educational technology will reimburse the company $1,702 each.

"The only reason we're paying for it is to end this public perception that something is misguided," said Rep. Tim Melton, D-Pontiac.

Melton, chairman of the House Education Policy Committee, said House Democrats erred last week when they announced that they planned to put $38 million into the budget to buy iPods for students. He said that was never the plan, but it was reported in the Michigan press and then picked up by the nation's media. He said the "iPod controversy" has become a national joke.

"We did the press a great disservice and we're deeply sorry for that," said Melton.

The other two lawmakers who went on the California trip were House Speaker Andy Dillon, D-Redford Township, and Rep. Matthew Gillard, D-Alpena, who is the chair of the House Appropriations subcommittee on education. It was Gillard who held an iPod up before reporters when talking about the plans to put more technology into the classroom.

Gillard said Dillon, who did not attend today's new conference, was "greatly disappointed" by the flap over iPods.

"There was never a plan to provide an iPod for every child in the state of Michigan," Melton said.

He said that because of the state's budget crisis the entire $38 million proposal could be scrapped. He said most of the proposed money would actually be used for teacher development on ways to make technology as much of the classroom environment as a chalkboard.

Melton on Beckmann this Morning (none / 0) (#1)
by Republican Yankee on Fri Apr 13, 2007 at 04:00:03 PM EST
So, Rep. Melton decided to go on Beckmann this morning to talk about iPods.  What stuck out at me was Melton saying that Dillon is frustrated (though he won't tell us this himself, where is he?) that given the budget challenges why are we talking about iPods?

    Mr. Melton, OUR POINT EXACTLY!

    An actual e-mail? (none / 0) (#2)

I thought this was going to be like the Epolito rumor that you floated a couple weeks back that got refuted a couple of days later. At least this time you actually have something to back it up.

    I'm a little cornfuzzled.

They erred when they said it would be used to buy iPods, but it was never the plan?  Then why would they say it?  "Statements Gone Wild: Lansing 2007"

Oh, that's right.  Democrats and their "sense of humor".  Like John Kerry's "stuck in Iraq" joke.  Like Don Imus's recent botched "joke".  We have a lot of people being called on the carpet, and their response?

"It was just a joke.  I'm sorry Michiganders dont' have a sense of humor!"... hmm.

[Melton] said that because of the state's budget crisis the entire $38 million proposal could be scrapped. He said most of the proposed money would actually be used for teacher development on ways to make technology as much of the classroom environment as a chalkboard.

So it was never the plan to actually buy iPods (because that was just a joke), but instead we're going to change the priorities of the spending and possibly even scrap the proposal?

If the statement was just a joke, why scrap the proposal?  If there wasn't anything really wrong with it... (other than actually buying iPods or "MP3 Players")... then why tweak it?

Yeah, I'm going paranoid.  Those darn jokers in Lansing got me good!  Democrats, you make me laugh!  You so funny!  Tell me another joke, like the one with the Rabbi and the Goldfish...
