Granholm helps announce 1,400 net job loss and calls layoffs "very fortunate" for Michigan

Just when you thought you'd heard it all, right?

We brought you word yesterday that Jennifer Granholm would be attending a presser to announce the building of a replacement plant for Daimler-Chysler down in South East Michigan.  The plant is expected to employ a few hundred folks but it replaces Detroit Axle which will be shuttered and currently employs nearly 2,000.

Instead of sticking it out in Lansing today during the tea-bag protest (she sent John Cherry instead) she did indeed make her way down to SE.

But the news she helped announce was much worse than we expected.

According to the Associated Press the total damage done to Michigan's workforce by these restructurings amounts to 1,400 homes without a breadwinner.  1,400 moms and dads out of work.  1,400 families that are about to face one of the most difficult times of their lives.

And Jennifer Granholm's response?  She said it was "very fortunate" that we're only losing 1,400.

    Read on...

So one might ask, why are we fortunate?  Could it have really been worse?

The sad truth is it could.  According to the AP:

State and local governments approved tax incentives for the company to keep the plants in Michigan, and even though the employment is lower than current levels, Gov. Jennifer Granholm said the incentives are justified.

"It was a choice between this and no investment," she said, adding that the jobs could have gone to neighboring states or Mexico.

So state and local tax cuts kept this from being that much worse.  But I thought the Governor was advocating for $3 billion in new taxes back in Lansing?

I know I'm not the only person who sees a little inconsistency here.

    And that's not "very fortunate."

Granholm does it again. (none / 0) (#1)

The woman definitely has a way of trying to make everything look good. I had to move from Michigan to Virginia so my wife could get work. Now, Ford is closing a plant down here and some of their higher seniority people got job offers in Michigan. There was an article in the paper down here where they were talking to some of the people who went to work in Michigan. (Read the article:http://content.hamptonroads.com/story.cfm?story=122537&ran=162791). What many are finding is that the other spouse cannot find work in Michigan and that some are living apart until they can once again get back together.

and dishonest headlines. Granholm didn't say that the layoffs were "very fortunate" for Michigan. From what I've read, she didn't say it at all.

As for lost jobs, these plants don't get built overnight so no one at these plants is losing their job tomorrow or any time soon. By the time these plants open, it's likely that attrition, retirement and job shifts will have covered most of those positions. If the economy has turned around enough, there may be positions elsewhere within Chysler.

In any case, it's a real pathetic display to criticize the announcement of almost $2 billion dollars in investment in Michigan. Just a week ago, you all were claiming that Michigan couldn't compete for automotive facilities. How does it feel to be shown that you all were so wrong about that?

She said that during her remarks yesterday (none / 0) (#3)

And I don't call 1,400 fewer jobs in auto part supply proof that we can compete for auto manufacturing plants.

Even if they were auto manufacturing jobs, -1,400 is still in the red.  Not something to celebrate.

Speaking of things folks have said... you've railed on and on about tax cuts not working (especially when you want to change the subject since no one has actively advocated for a tax cut on this site in months) but the Governor stood at the podium yesterday and told the world that she'd granted Daimler Chrysler huge tax cuts so they'd ONLY lay-off 1,400 people, a decision you're calling a victory.

She said without them then there could have been another 1,400 or so employees going to other states.

Huh.  Just thought that was interesting.

who said that's unique to Michigan? (none / 0) (#5)

You've just always said "if they work then why isn't our economy a lot better?"

Which is funny because then you'll argue that statistics that show the economy isn't better are wrong because you found a statement from the Michigan Chamber of Commerce that says Michigan has good tort laws.

So you argue the economy sucks and then argue that it doesn't.  Which is odd.

Then the Governor and Democrats offer tax breaks and incentives to prevent MORE than 1,400 jobs being lost in Michigan's economy and suddenly you argue that yeah, sure, they work and everyone does it.

That's a whole lot of personal contradiction there boss.  Not sure if you're honestly confused or if you're just getting tangled up in conflicting talking points.  I've gotten the impression before that you're a pretty intelligent sort so I'll just assume it's the later, but still, even that doesn't do you any favors.

of tax cuts to lure companies?

That's a revelation.  Welcome to the fold.

so you'd rather they lay off MORE than 1,400 (none / 0) (#9)

    thanks for the clarification.

of course they'll be happy to have the work (none / 0) (#14)

that they wouldn't have had the governor not cut taxes for Daimler-Chrysler.

Of course, the other 1,400 people who they work with right now and WON'T once these plants become the new face of axle production for the auto maker aren't going to be so happy about it but hey, laying off 1,400 people?  That kind of news doesn't even phase the Chief Executive anymore, does it?

Who's criticizing the tax breaks Granholm offered? (none / 0) (#18)

You're the only one I've heard, chief.

All that and still 1,400 moms and dads lost their jobs.  Now THAT's leadership.

I remember when she was running around the state holding sham "town hall" meetings to peddle her $3 billion tax hike scheme one businessman in Grand Rapids stood up and said "Governor, I understand what you're trying to do but this tax hike will hurt me in the following ways... A, B, C, D..." He laid them all out and explained he'd have to lay folks off or cut salaries.  I can't remember which (sorry).

And he says "so please, don't raise my taxes."

    Her response:

    "Well what's your plan then?"

Um... you want a small businessman to come up with a $42+ billion appropriations plan on live television in the course of the next fifteen seconds?  Does it get more disingenuous than that?

Seems to be a favorite trick of lefties these days.  Ask regular folks who disagree with them on principle over an issue to produce full outlines and visions and plans right there on the spot.

And since just about everything fires off some seemingly useless memory somewhere in my brain this particular trick reminds me of an old gimmick in the WWF circa somewhere in the mid 80s.

I used to watch those wrestlers like it was nobody's business.  I loved the stuff when I was a kid.  Tito Santana... !Arriba!

Anyways... you remember Ted Dibiase?  The Million Dollar Man?  He did some interview with one of the announcers one time, and I'll never forget this because I was like six or seven and just knew the stuff was real.  So he takes this kid out of the audience and hands him a basketball.

And he tells him... "look, son, if you can bounce this basketball TEN times then I'll give you this nice crisp one-hundred dollar bill.  Just bounce the ball.  TEN times.  OK?"

And the kid smiled and was all excited and started bouncing.

    One.

    Two.

    Three.

    Four.

    Five.

    Six.

    Seven.

    Eight.

    Nine.

    SWAT!!!!!

Dibiase reached in and slapped the ball away into the audience as he got ready to bounce it for the tenth time.  "Awwww... oh no!  You were SOOOOO close kid.  Too bad."  Then he laughed diabolically and everyone in the audience wanted Hulk Hogan to come down and beat him silly.

Now these lefties are doing the same thing.  Just bounce the ball, junior.  All that's missing is the diabolical laugh.  Guess they save that for when the cameras are off.
