105 Days and counting without Andy Dillon's long promised SBT replacementBy Nick, Section News
While the democrats in the House got portions of their budget plan in under the 100 day mark with a flurry of immediate discharges and votes well past midnight during one looooong session last week we're still waiting on their SBT replacement plan.
In fact, today is day 105 since 2010 gubernatorial candidate Andy Dillon said:
"We are facing a budget shortfall this current fiscal year in excess of $500 million and next year's is in excess of $3 billion. Bottom line: We have a lot of work to do...
"We did this in anticipation of the looming budget crisis and the need for us to roll up our sleeves and get to work immediately." Journal of the House, Jan. 10, 2007, pgs. 22-23 105 Days now without action. Read on...
Down on the other side of the Capitol, the Senate's introduced their BEST plan. They've reworked the BEST plan. They've discussed the BEST plan. They've talked to the press, to the Governor, to the House, to constituents. They have a plan.
But Dillon continues to stall. This in the face of a joint demand from the Michigan Chamber of Commerce and Jennifer Granholm herself that they do something quick! They made their appeal together last Thursday. According to reports today, Dillon may finally move tomorrow. Which would be day 106, for those of you keeping score at home. I think it was Republican Yankee who pointed out earlier this week how frustrating it must be for the Speaker of the House having the sitting governor, the leader of his own party abdicating her Constitutional responsibility again and again and demanding that he come up with solutions. But it's just as frustrating and unfair for the Senate and they didn't stall and delay and avoid. It's time for Dillon to find the guts to act.
