Granholm stamps her feet, she's taking her ball and going home

So Jennifer Granholm is the great defender of public education, huh?  Then why in blue blazes is she threatening (again) to close public schools unless Republicans acquiesce to her demands for massive tax hikes when the House and the Senate have EACH already solved all but about $30 per pupil worth of funding for the fiscal year?

The Associated Press is reporting this morning that Jennifer Granholm still plans on sending a letter to public schools notifying them that if they don't start taking their MEA marching orders and making noise in favor of tax hikes she'll be cutting their per pupil funding by $125 this June.

We talked about this, oh, weeks ago now when Granholm first threw this particular temper tantrum and red-faced told all of the kids on the block if she didn't get her way she'd smash all of her toys.

    Read on...

As the DetNews reported at the time:

Robert Emerson, the state's budget director, said in a letter Thursday to state school superintendents that the cuts are aimed at wiping out a school funding shortfall that already totals $377 million and could rise as high as $527 million by mid-May.

Republican lawmakers called the letter a scare tactic, but school officials have growing concerns.

The lost revenue would have grave consequences for districts across Michigan, said Tom White, executive director of the Michigan School Business Officials, an association of finance directors.

"It's the most dire situation that the state has faced, maybe ever, and certainly in the 20-plus years I've been dealing with school funding," White said. "My guess is, at some level, there would be some schools to close before June."

That $377 million he referenced?  The Senate voted unanimously earlier this week to wipe out over $300 million from that particular ledger.  The House approved the same changes.

That leaves about $75 million.  Break it out and it comes to just over $30 per pupil.

Hardly $125.  Not even close.  Even if the revenue estimating conference comes in with the worst case scenario pushing the TOTAL budget deficit to the high $400 million range, the Democrats in the House and the Republicans in the Senate have already passed between them $500 million worth of spending cuts.

    They're in conference right now.

The Governor is trying to rile up her base and she's lying to do it.  She doesn't have to close schools.  The money is there.  The cuts are there.  So why is she trying to hold Michigan kids hostage in her almost religious fervor to raise their parents' taxes?

There are serious problems in this state right now.  Look at the front page of any paper in the state, Madame Governor.  Michigan deserves better than leadership by hissy fit.

between the school aid fund and the general fund? Cuts in one doesn't equal savings in the other.

I don't like to see the cuts but the Governor's forcing them to deal with the issue now versus pushing it off to the next budget year. The "cuts" that Bishop passed were accounting gimmicks. They didn't fix anything. How's what the Governor is doing any different than what Brooks Patterson did by ending the SBT without a replacement?

were specifically addressing the school aid fund.  Not the general fund.  (As referenced in the stories linked above)

She's trying to create a problem that does not exist.  Threatening to close down schools when you don't have to is bush league.

But I guess this is one of the areas you agree with the governor.

Which of the governor's positions do you disagree with, Novi?  And why?  You mentioned there were a few... could you kindly offer a list?

The Governor's not asking them to deal with all future school aid budget crises.

Every year is its own challenge.  Every year up to now has been a challenge, and yes... we know next year will be a challenge too.  By all accounts, we won't know how short we'll be until March or April 2008.

So what exactly is she forcing us to deal with, now?

The Governor isn't waiting for the next estimate to be officially released. Apparently, some people want to keep their heads in the sand:

Lawmakers took action earlier this week to reduce the budget problems from $377 million to $62 million. However, Granholm said new revenue estimates reflecting weak tax collections bumped the figure back up to $198 million.

So where are those supposed $500 million in cuts that are supposedly being discussed in conference committees? Where's the $200 million needed for the school aid fund?

Funny you should ask... (none / 0) (#5)

working on a formatting issue right now.  I'll post the various cuts later today.

By the way, where's your list of issues with which you disagree with the Governor and the "why" for each?

You said there were a few and I'd still really like to know what they are.

    Thanks!
