EXCLUSIVE: Mike Bishop talks with RightMichigan.com

Yesterday evening Senate Majority Leader Mike Bishop attended the regular meeting of the Kent County Republican Committee (think Grand Rapids) and had a chance to speak to the activists and volunteers who continually make Kent County one of the leading conservative voting blocks in the state.

First things first, the room was packed.  I live in Grand Rapids and attend these meetings regularly but haven't seen a crowd like this since last October.  People are paying attention and they were eager to share their thoughts with the Majority Leader.  Darn-near universally, the first sentiment everyone expressed?  Cut spending, reform government and don't raise taxes!

And that wasn't lost on Bishop.  I approached his office about grabbing him for a quick question after the event and they in turn suggested that, even better, he's well aware of RightMichigan.com, that they're paying attention to the conservative blogging community and he would be more than willing to sit down for a few minutes.

I'll let Senator Bishop speak for himself for the most part but a few initial thoughts before you click PLAY.

    1. Clearly my future is not in television news.

    2. The man seems clearly and uniquely focused on moving real, substantive reforms.  He calls a lot of the Dem reforms "window dressing."

    3. He's willing to take on big labor.  You'll catch the reference about halfway through... this comes on the SAME day Sen. Nancy Cassis introduced Right-to-Work legislation in the Senate and follows a similar bill from Rep. Brian Palmer in the House.  That is NOT going to be popular with Dems or the unions, especially in South East, but God bless him for picking the fight.  Kinda makes you a little hopeful, doesn't it?

    4. They're paying attention to the net-roots.

    Now... click play!

    Bring it on (1.00 / 1) (#1)

I would love to have the debate over "Right to Work" and other "reforms" that the Republicans are pushing. In your echo chamber, you all convince yourselves that everyone except a few "Stalinists" want to see this legislation passed. Then when you get to the real world, you fall flat on your face (see DeVos and school vouchers). So let's have the debate.

is for sure a huuuuuge leap.  But yeah, the debate would be good for this state.  If the Democrats are serious about reforms they should consider it... not something the voters need to approve like vouchers.  It's a debate that could be had in the legislature.

I'm all about bringing it on.  Exciting!

I lived in Michigan and now live in the right-to-work state of Tennessee and we are constantly growing. The state's economy reminds me of Michigan's in the mid-90's. I don't believe right-to-work will be a miracle solve all for the states economic issues but it will begin to resolve the problem of TOO MANY dependants that refuse produce at an optimal rate and expect to be paid. Whether it be those who are protected by the unions or those who are being paid by the government (welfare). No ABLE bodied person should ever be on welfare unless the country experiences a depression.

Michigan's root issue is the transitioning from a powerhouse production state to a powerhouse entitlement state. Right-to-work will help to rectify the problem.

Once again I find myself in partial agreement with Novi Democrat, though I don't necessarily see the connection between Vouchers and Right to Work except that maybe they're just all being lumped in with the so-called Right Wing Agenda.

I think pushing vouchers was a huge mistake on the part of Dick DeVos.  In Public Education, we the people want to say that if we spend public dollars on education then we don't want ANY special interest interjecting radical viewpoints using those dollars.  Unfortunately I think that a lot of that does still go on in our public schools, but I digress.  If teaching from a faith-based perspective is important to a parent I think that's fine, but do it on your own dime.  I certainly don't want Creationism being taught in the public schools since it relies on faith alone to support it (and the next logical question is: whose version of faith sets the tone for that?).

As for Right to Work though, I think it really is time for an intelligent debate in this state, and not just talking points on both sides.  I think the Unions can still serve an important watch-dog purpose on Industry, but if they're to not go the way of the dinosaur they need to work in more of a non-adversarial fashion.  I know I come off as anti-union in many cases, but it makes me nervous to say that we should just simply trust industry to carte blanche run their affairs without some threat of retribution lurking from the little guys.  That being said, I believe that it is time for reform in this state if we're going to survive.
