Just say no!By amanda zaluckyj, Section News
Last week Nick issued some "Urgent Action" posts about an upcoming vote in the Michigan Senate. Basically, he reminded us that it is our job to let our Senators know how detrimental higher taxes would be for Michigan and how important it is for them to stand up to those proposals.
I took some time and wrote a letter to my state senator, Ron Jelinek. Unfortunately, he is on the "at risk" list for Republicans walking the tax hike line. It is not a good feeling knowing I volunteered for a guy that might turn his back on Michigan's families and vote to shake them for even more money, especially when obvious reforms have not yet been made. It didn't take long to let him know how I felt...
I simply reminded him that Michigan's economy is less than stellar. I pointed out that tax hikes will only make it worse. And I happened to mention that as my friends graduate from the universities around this state, they are being forced to move across the country. Unless he supports splitting families and hurting his own constituents, Senator Jelinek will consider doing what is right and voting "no" on tax increases.
See? Easy. And don't think that the other side, those who support increases because they love to spend YOUR money, are not letting their Senators know their stance on the issue. Apparently, some college students rallied at the capital upset at cuts in higher education funding (although I don't believe I saw a similar article in my local paper about the students that protested against higher taxes, but that is another story...). I suppose I do see their point though. These students won't be actually paying the higher taxes upon graduation, because they won't be paying taxes in Michigan. What is the income tax in Arkansas...? The point is, there are a few of us that get it: raising taxes will only further hurt our already struggling economy. We can no longer afford to play around. This is not about partisan battles or lots of numbers. This is about real people around this state trying to make ends meet. The Republicans in Congress have to work against a tax increase and we as voters have to make sure they do it. Once again, click here for all the information you need to contact your elected representatives and let them know your position. If Governor Granholm wants to keep her campaigns promises to state employees, unions, and MESA then she should also keep her word to the rest of us and stop pushing for more taxes and work to find REAL solutions for our state.
