More of the Same in Michigan

The news around Michigan seems bleak, but that probably doesn't surprise anyone anymore. Bad news has become so common here in this state that I'm afraid people might be starting to tune it out.

Due to budget woes, more construction workers are being laid off. Perhaps thousands of more people will be losing jobs and those companies will look to other states to operate. (Good news for Michigan drivers: worse road conditions! Is that possible?)

More unemployment, more people being forced to leave the state, more hardships for Michigan families. More bad news.

Unfortunately, we continue to hear the same problems, but no answers. Companies closing. Friends losing jobs. Young people leaving the state.

How much longer can this go on?

What is our Congress doing to change things? Not much. They decided to stay on vacation this week. Andy Dillon apparently doesn't think that there is important work to be done. Who cares if the FY2008 budget waits a while longer? Does it real matter if Michigan families have to go back to work in a struggling economy while the people they hired to fix these problems are hanging out at the beach?

What is Governor Granholm doing to respond? After finishing up her television ad touting her successes on the new business tax (imagine that...she gets on TV to say how proud she is of a new tax...), she continues to obsess over raising taxes across the board. Does anyone else get the feeling she's almost giddy about doing it? While not promoting higher taxes, she's lying about striking deals in which to raise them and finding frivolous new ways in which to spend millions of taxpayer dollars to make cities cool.

Are you kidding me? Is this the best we can do?

The Lansing State Journal reports that both sides of the aisle are now dedicated to reforms (where is the proof from the Democrats?). When are we going to see these? As Republican Senator Nancy Cassis said,
"We all have said that reforms are needed in this great state, but when do we start?"

    Good question.

If something good were to come from Lansing, it literally might shock us all enough that it causes health problems. Let's hope that when Congress gets back next week they really get to work.
