    Minimum Wage Increases

    The Mining Journal

    on the minimum wage increases:

"Jayna Otto, a fourth-year student from Oshkosh, Wis., has been working at Northern [Michigan University] for almost two years and has gone through the two wage increases as an employee. She said the increases have been beneficial to her.

"Once minimum wage went up, I was able to afford to get my car fixed," Otto said. "I also was able to move into a better apartment."

In both phases of the increase, Otto said only one major problem arose.

"They didn't know if we'd get to keep any raises the employees had received; it was a big topic of discussion," she said. 'Thankfully, they let anyone who had a raise keep it -- I thought it was fair.'

"The minimum wage raise has largely helped Otto, but she said she's noticed differences in the community -- some of which have altered her lifestyle.

"'One restaurant that I used to go to raised their prices, now I don't really go there a whole lot, it's too expensive,' she said."

Well Golly, Gomer! Who'd a thunk it?

She's a fourth-year student and wasn't able to envision the implications?

    Makes one wonder!

    the min wage hike (5.00 / 1) (#1)

helped her move into a better apartment?

She's making minimum wage and she upgraded?  AND fixed her car?

Is the minimum wage $13 an hour up at Northern?

    Thanks for the reminder (1.00 / 2) (#2)

Add that to the list of Granholm's accomplishments.

The Airhead-Who-Holds-The-Governor's-Title was responsible for the increase in minimum wage. Sure she was.

You really have to stretch things (or be really stupid) to add that to a list of her "accomplishments." I don't find signing her name to legislation anything that special.

The article states the bimbo is in her fourth-year of college - wonder if she's still in freshman status? She's as stupid as a certain poster to this site - hint - its name is Novi Democrat or Novi Dumb-o-cRAT.

Whee! More money to give back to the employers... (5.00 / 1) (#5)
by John Galt on Thu Jul 26, 2007 at 12:43:53 PM EST
NoviDemo pointed out how this was a "Granholm Accomplishment".  I don't like being reminded about having to pay more at restaurants because unskilled labor gets a little more cash.  Or how they can't bus the tables because they had to layoff employees.  It's kind-of a sticking point with me.

But here's something I thought was interesting...  (We obviously know she's a Democrat).

"They didn't know if we'd get to keep any raises the employees had received; it was a big topic of discussion," she said. 'Thankfully, they let anyone who had a raise keep it -- I thought it was fair.'

Anyone who hadn't received THEIR raise... just didn't get a raise.  But she thinks it's fair for her to keep her raise.  It was just fair, right?  Instead of enjoying the fact she had gotten a little extra money for a shortwhile (while others didn't)... she thinks it's more fair for her to continually get more money than others... and no bother that they didn't get their raise.

Sounds like the beginnings of a political career for this woman.  Can't you just see her following in Granholm's shoes?  I think they have comparable ethics, at least.

"The minimum wage raise has largely helped Otto, but she said she's noticed differences in the community -- some of which have altered her lifestyle.

"'One restaurant that I used to go to raised their prices, now I don't really go there a whole lot, it's too expensive,' she said."

    Now wait a minute.

The minimum wage increase allowed her to fix her car, and upgrade her apartment.  But she was eating out at restaurants regularly?  Minimum wage was so little, so pathetic... so unlivable... that she had to choose between Ramen Noodles and Eating at a Restaurant?  If only I could be so lucky.

You're telling me that given a choice between "better apartment" or "a fixed car"... she chose eating at a restaurant?  I have to seriously doubt the decision-making abilities of this woman.

    I just don't get how they don't get it. (5.00 / 1) (#7)

Democrats hail the minimum wage like it's the gold medal of all things economic.  I don't get why this is such a difficult concept for them to understand.  When you increase the minimum wage, you increase the cost for businesses (mostly small businesses).  They react to this by either laying-off people or, more commonly, increasing their prices.  Who do these price increases hurt the most?  You got it, our "most vulnerable" citizens who are living on a fixed income.  The same vulnerable citizens that Democrats have made a career out of claiming to "look out for".

Granholm's answer to this Economics 101 fact reminds us that she never took any economics courses in Harvard and if she did, she didn't pay attention very well.  Granholm claims that the minimum wage gives people more money, then they spend it, and that improves the economy.

It sounds nice, except for she completely forgets about inflation.  Sure, in the short-run people purchase more goods and services and economic activiy increases, but it's not long before the demand for those same goods and services causes the price tag to go up and the people who "got a raise" from the increased minimum wage are right back where they were to begin with.

The only real beneficiary from the minimum wage hikes is the government, who can justify taking more taxes out of people's income and collect more sales taxes from the short-run economic spending.  But everyone else gets boned, even if their union tells them they don't.

NEVER in the history of the world has increasing the minimum wage led the way to an economic recovery (I dare you to find me an example of this Dems).  Minimum wage increases HURT the economy, always have, always will.  Don't believe me?  Well, how about famed Clinton appointee and former Fed Chairman Alan Greenspan:

"I think the (minimum wage) does more damage than good" (Wall Street Journal, 1/21/1999).

by Rougman on Thu Jul 26, 2007 at 04:54:02 PM EST
Everyone should be reminded that the minimum wage bill that was passed had support from both sides of the bureaucratic (and economically challenged) aisle.

I honestly wish that Novi was correct for once and that we could pin all the blame on Granholm.  Alas, once again, he was wrong.

    Should be easy to document (1.00 / 1) (#10)

"Minimum wage increases HURT the economy, always have, always will."

We know when they have happened. You should be able to back it up with some data showing the negative impact.

    Want back up? (5.00 / 1) (#11)
by Republican Yankee on Thu Jul 26, 2007 at 07:20:56 PM EST
How about anybody who have ever known the difference between their rear end and their elbow when it comes to economics?

Typical Democrats.  They defy common sense, in this case economic, and then want us to "back up" what we're saying.  Hell, if a minimum wage increase isn't going to hurt business, let's pay everybody a minimum wage of $45.00 an hour.  What do you say Novi?

    I might be cherry picking (1.00 / 1) (#12)
by NoviDemocrat on Thu Jul 26, 2007 at 11:56:19 PM EST
since what I've read indicated that some minimum wage increases have been followed by higher unemployment (although whether is a cause and effect is not stated). But since you said that minimum wage increases ALWAYS hurt the economy, I just have to prove that's not always the case. This should do:

"before Bill Clinton stepped down as president, the minimum wage would see two more increases, landing at the current $5.15 in 1997, when unemployment dipped to 4.7 percent. The jobless rate would drop to a low of 3.9 percent by the time Clinton left office three years later."

So much for that "ALWAYS" statement.

    Yep... (5.00 / 1) (#17)
by Republican Yankee on Sat Jul 28, 2007 at 05:02:48 PM EST
I also alluded to the minimum wage being of short-run benefit at a greater long-run cost.

Novi probably got in a lot of trouble in elementary school for not reading directions carefully.

So again, a minimum wage increase ALWAYS ends up hurting the economy.

    Besides... why do we need... (5.00 / 1) (#18)
by John Galt on Sat Jul 28, 2007 at 07:51:34 PM EST
the Government to set the price of labor?

The reasons given by Democrats pushing this through was that $5.35/hour was not a living wage.

So is $7 or $8 a living wage?  How about $9?  I read about a guy who went to Phoenix, a "Right to Work" state making $12.50/hour and he couldn't survive.

So are we being lied to?  Why do we need the government to set the price of labor for us?

    I'm the bimbo (none / 0) (#19)
by jotto on Thu Sep 13, 2007 at 04:02:47 PM EST
Hi I am the "bimbo" as a lot of mysoginists on this website like to refer to me as. I gave this interview a long time ago and I can't believe people care enough to comment on it. The quotes given are not quotes at all but simply gross simplifications of what I really was saying. I did not move into an apartment or get my car fixed BECAUSE of the increase, I said that the increase was helpful in doing so. Also, the guy wanted to know if anything had changed, so I replied that well, I don't really go to that one restaurant that charges 10 dollars for a cheeseburger (sorry I couldn't think of a better example). And yes I created an account here simply to say all of this, but I have never been taken out of context so harshly or been referred to in such a rude manner...you don't even know me. By the way if you want to call me dumb go ahead, but do not insult the female sex (calling me a bimbo) just to make me look bad. (By the way, I am a senior and my gpa is 3.6)

    Jayna,

Don't sweat it. A lot of the people spouting off on this site wouldn't have the guts to say those things to your face. They're brave when they're hiding behind their keyboards. Thanks for coming to Michigan for your higher education!
