Central Michigan University's contract with Gary Peters

    (Promoted by Nick...)

    (Cross-posted at The Peters Report)

Central Michigan University's contract with Gary Peters reveals the Democratic congressional candidate is lying about his professorship.

Peters, who has started his three-year term an endowed political science professor, has repeatedly said the position is part-time, allowing him to collect a $65,000-a-year salary and taxpayer-funded perks while running against U.S. Rep. Joe Knollenberg (R-Oakland County).

However, the contract, dated March 20, 2007, indicates "temporary assistant professor" Peters is "full-time" in the Department of Political Science. The contract also includes a provision stating: "As a full-time employee we expect you to give primary commitment to the duties of this assignment during the time of your appointment."

As a professor, Peters will teach one, three-hour class a week and organize one public policy forum a semester. He will also be expected to main office hours, serve as a student advisor, develop lesson plans, grade assignments and prepare examinations.

    The contract

    March 20, 2007

    Mr. Gary Peters
    2645 Bloomfield Crossing
    Bloomfield Hills, MI 48304

    Dear Mr. Peters:

Upon the recommendation of Dr. Delbert Ringquist, Department Chairperson, and Dr. Pamela Gates, Interim Dean of the College of Humanities and Social and Behavioral Sciences, I am pleased to offer you appointment as Temporary Assistant Professor, full-time, in the Department of Political Science (PSC), at the CMU Mount Pleasant campus, for the 2007-08 academic year beginning August 20, 2007.  Your salary will be $65,000, which is your academic year full-time base salary.  This employment offer, if accepted and any other contracts as yet uncompleted constitute the University's only employment agreements with you (the temporary/visiting faculty member) and in no way do they promise or imply any future offers or ongoing commitments beyond the term(s) stated herein.

The professional responsibilities you will be expected to assume during your appointment will involve teaching and teaching-related duties such as student advising, where applicable.  Please contact the department chairperson for more information about your specific assignment.  As a full-time employee we expect you to give primary commitment to the duties of this assignment during the time of your appointment.  If you have made, or currently intend to make, any commitments to engage in other services or obligations for any other CMU department, including ProfEd, or for a college or university other than CMU, during the time you are employed to teach in the department of PSC at CMU, you must inform your department chairperson and dean prior to signing this appointment letter.  The extent to which you may commit yourself to duties, which might conflict with your commitment to PSC is limited by CMU policy and by College practice.  Once you sign this contract you are also required to inform your department chairperson and dean, prior to entering into an agreement to engage in other duties through CMU's ProfEd or any other CMU department, or for a college or university other than CMU, during the time you are employed to teach in PSC at CMU.  These provisions are designed to avoid any conflict of commitment that might result from any such engagements.

The details of CMU Choices, CMU's flexible benefit plan, have not been finalized for the 2007-08 year.  Enclosed is a summary of benefits that were available for the 2006-07 year.  When the details of CMU Choices are known, an updated summary of benefit programs will be available from the Faculty Personnel Services website at: http://www.fps.cmich.edu.  In addition, the Benefits and Wellness Office will be contacting you with information and enrollment forms for the various benefit programs available to you. If you have questions concerning non-benefit aspects of your employment, please contact Faculty Personnel Services (989-774-3368).

In order to accept this appointment, please sign and return the enclosed copy to the Office of Faculty Personnel Services by April 4, 2007.  We appreciate your association with Central Michigan University.

    Sincerely,

    E. Gary Shapiro
    Interim Executive Vice President/Provost

    cc: P. Gates

    So who's signed up... (5.00 / 1) (#1)

To watch Peters, and ensure he puts in his 40 hours per week at CMU? ("Full Time Employee", don'tcha know).

I want to make sure I kick a few PB&J sammiches their way...

I can't help but imagine that this will look poorly against "Tiny" Peters.  Ripping off "higher ed" to run for office is certainly something that won't be looked upon highly.

Well, maybe by the taxpayers, but I'm sure the dems will look the other way and won't say a thing.

    Peters isn't worth our time (none / 0) (#3)

You all are making a mountain out of a mole hill in my opinion. While I don't believe ANYONE associated with the Granholm Administration should be employed ever again after leaving it, this isn't a full time job. He'll essentially be teaching one class per semester and putting on one policy forum per semester. As a Central alum, and someone who had the honor and pleasure of taking the class when Bill Ballenger was teaching it, its not a 40 hour/week job. Having said that, if he knew he was running for Congress, he probably shouldn't have taken the job, but that's his prerogative. At any rate, I'd encourage students to not take his class.

If he signed a contract, he's got to live up to it (none / 0) (#5)

It's what we call "the law."

So this makes me feel like Lurch Kerry (none / 0) (#8)

Yes, its true. I was actually for the Peters appointment BEFORE I was against it. What made me change my mind? Well, I was reading the Peters Report blog, specifically the letter from Pamela Gates (http://petersreport.blogspot.com/2007/08/petersgate-day-10.html) and she just struck me as completely and unnecessarily arrogant. The following is what really set me off:

These educational credentials, quite frankly, exceed those of Mr. Peters' two predecessors in the position, and no one has ever intimated that either Craig Ruff or William Ballenger were anything but extraordinarily accomplished occupants of the Griffin chair.

Ok, I'm sorry, but I'll take degrees from Princeton and Harvard over Alma and Wayne State any day of the week. Bill Ballenger was the ideal occupant for that chair. While its true he's a Republican, his political leanings weren't blatantly obvious. Could Peters be the same way while he's running for Congress? Do they think the students wouldn't read the papers about one of their professors? Another point that needs to be made is that the classes are based on Michigan government. Why would you want someone who now thinks he's too good for Michigan teaching something his heart is not in?

This seems like just another case of pro-liberal bias in a university setting. In my true senior year (I only had one super senior semester, just to clear that up), the last presidential election was taking place, and that model for good health, Michael Moore campaigned on campus (at CMU) for John Kerry. It ended up costing somewhere around $40,000 to host him (Tim Horton's couldn't have been happier). At the same time, Sean Hannity offered to come to campus for free. The Program Board rejected Hannity's offer, but said they would get a pro-Bush speaker in as well. That person ended up being Victoria Clarke, not exactly someone as high profile as fat Mikey.
