Jury says the Hip-Hop Mayor is GUILTY!

    By Nick, Section News
Posted on Tue Sep 11, 2007 at 02:05:24 PM EST

Huge news coming out of Detroit this afternoon.  The FREEP reports on a quick verdict in the civil suit filed against Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and the city by former Detroit police officers who claimed to have been unjustly terminated for blowing the whistle on the Mayor's shady dealings.

It took only three hours for the Wayne County jury to return its verdict, a stunning defeat for Kilpatrick and the city. It was unclear whether the city would appeal the decision, but any verdict against the city would have to be paid from city funds provided by taxpayers...

The jurors awarded $3.6 million to (Officer) Brown and $2.9 million to (Officer) Nelthrope.

Callahan instructed jurors Tuesday morning that the state's Whistleblower Protection Act is designed to provide protection to employees who report or about to report suspected violations of rules, laws or regulations by their employer or a co-worker. He said the protection only applies to employees who have a "reasonable belief" of violations.

Apparently the jury concluded this case met the necessary criteria.  In their eyes, the mayor is guilty and now the taxpayers of the city of Detroit will have to pay for his personal vendetta.

Somehow, someway, the crookedest city in the crookedest county in the state of Michigan now looks a little more crooked.  Yet somehow they continue to elect Democrats.  You'd think voters might start to notice a pattern and smarten up.  Maybe next year.  Right.

was a crook. He's the mayor who preceeded Kwame so that would make him part of your pattern of crookedness that you described. I wonder how Mr. Archer would take to you characterizing him as part of a pattern of crooked politicians.

    You said Kwame's behavior (none / 0) (#3)
by NoviDemocrat on Tue Sep 11, 2007 at 03:04:26 PM EST
represents a pattern among Detroit politicians. Last time I checked, there's only been 3 mayors in the last 20 years, CAY, DA and Kwame. So if there's been a pattern of crookedness among the Mayors who have served, that would include Archer.

Why does a young black mayor have to be called "The Hip Hop Mayor"?

Why The "Hip Hop" Moniker? (none / 0) (#6)
by PMOTVRWC on Tue Sep 11, 2007 at 03:43:01 PM EST
Because that is how campaigned during his first bid for Mayor.  He wanted to present the typical gansta persona with the ear ring and the in your face attitute.

    Nick's wrong either way (none / 0) (#8)
by NoviDemocrat on Tue Sep 11, 2007 at 04:16:16 PM EST
because you either were talking about the Mayor and smeared Archer or you were talking about all elected officials in Detroit and smeared 99% of them. How many Detroit politicians can you name in the last 5 years who were "crooked" and what percentage of all officials who served did that represent? Public officials should be held to a higher standard than the public-at-large but to call all Detroit politicians crooked because of the misdeeds of a handful of people is not right.

during his first campaign dj, as it was King Kwame himself who called himself the hip hop mayor.

To imply that it had anything to do with skin color is itself racist since no one here ever mentioned his race.

And what does hip hop have to do with race? (none / 0) (#12)
by Nick on Tue Sep 11, 2007 at 04:28:25 PM EST
    Seriously.

Well, in the troll's defense here... a lot of subconscious bigots automatically associate certain things with being "black."

I remember my freshman year of college, having just graduated from a school the student body affectionately referred to as "Ghetto" High, heading off to a predominately white school for the first time in my life and literally being assaulted in the parking lot one day and told to act my race.

My sin?  I was attempting to explain how hip hop and the classic rap acts of the 80s through mid-90s represented genuine artistic expression that meritted far more respect than they traditionally received.

But I said the words "hip hop" and a bigot automatically associated that with "black" and physically and verbally attacked me for it.

So I'm used to those with a deep-seeded subconsious prejudice jumping to conclusions and applying their own closeted-racist take where it has no business being applied.  It happens far too often.

If he called himself that... (none / 0) (#13)

Why didn't you say that earlier?  You just mentioned an earring and an "in your face" attitude.

If a white guy does it, he doesn't get called "hip-hop".

    Explain it (none / 0) (#14)

    "Did I say all?"

You said Democrats generically. Last time I checked, there aren't any Republican officeholders in Detroit. Since you didn't limit your comments to a particular pol. the implication is that all Democrats, which is all elected officials in Detroit, are crooked. If you want to walk back your claims, feel free to do that.

It seems i'm a little late to the troll-fest.

    But using your logic, NoviDemon...

So because Dennis Archer might not be crooked, the whole city isn't crooked.

The City of Angels: Detroit.  It only became corrupt when this Jury ruled against Kwame.  Right.

Mayor Kilpatrick is richly deserving of this honor from a jury of his peers.  The Other Club noted this in 2005: Kwame, the Ambassador Bridge is right there. Take it.

Sadly, voters who possess sufficient gray matter for anything but autonomic functions would have already woken up.

...you mention that there are no Republican office-holders in Detroit (well duh).  Ever think that maybe that little fact could contribute to a culture of corruption?  Are there any sorts of "checks and balances" on the Democrats there?

The democrats have run Detroit for decades, and things just get worse and worse.  While I think Archer is honest-as I recall, he wouldn't even use his City credit card, unlike some folks we all know- I always wondered what it was that made him bail out when he did, rather than running again.  Perhaps he decided that the City couldn't be saved from itself...?

    Just a thought.

by NoviDemocrat on Wed Sep 12, 2007 at 02:26:00 PM EST
Do we get a culture of corruption in places where Republicans have been running the show for decades? Look at what happened in DC with Cunningham, Ney and Delay and the rest of the band of crooks accused and convicted of various crimes and they weren't even in power that long.

"an accomplice of thieves, forgers, etc."

DeLay was tight buddies with Abramoff (felon) and the two traveled together on the Abramoff organized junkets:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_trips_funded_by_Jack_Abramoff

and kept company with Rep. Bob Ney (felon) and David Safavian (felon). Does anyone have any question that DeLay either was involved in all of this? Or are we supposed to believe that all of this happened and DeLay was just clueless about it all? Right.

I'm glad you found the definition of "crook" that includes "accomplices"

Now look up the definition of "accomplice".

Abarmoff went to jail.  Too bad "association' and "accomplice" aren't exactly synonyms.

But you realize that a larger number of Democrats fall prey to your definition game.  Debbie Stabmenow and Two Penny Jenny, Hillary Clinton, Bill Clinton... The only clean Dem Presidential candidate might be Barack "Osama" Obama.

Who are you kidding? (none / 0) (#35)

Everyone knows that DeLay and Abramoff worked together. How the Bugman has managed prison is a mystery to me but perhaps the wheels of justice grind slowly in this case. Of course with Alberto Gonzalez at the helm, maybe I'm not so surprised.

Thanks for the laugh (none / 0) (#38)

You're right, DeLay resigned from Congress because he was a boy scout. I love the irony of you attacking Democrats while discussing a scandal that included criminal convictions of Republican lobbyists, a Republican congressmen and members of the Republican President's administration.

Sherrif Hackel of Macomb county (the "Senior") also went away for rape.  He was a good ol' Democrat.

I think there are quite a few more criminals in your ranks than in ours.

And what, I can't talk about your criminals because a former college republican guy who's getting sentenced?  What kind of failed, flawed stupidity is that argument, anyways?

All of this is well and fine, but you still haven't met your burden of proof about Tom DeLay.

    Who's burden of proof? (none / 0) (#42)
by NoviDemocrat on Fri Sep 14, 2007 at 02:26:07 PM EST
That would be your burden. I'm satisfied with my conclusion that DeLay is a crook.

    If we're talking crooks here (none / 0) (#43)
by PMOTVRWC on Fri Sep 14, 2007 at 06:19:52 PM EST
maybe we should include the 11 democrats from New Jersey who were just indicted on a number of charges.

ND for every republican who you want to bring up I can match you.

Oh yea, I forgot about the prominent Tenn. Dem who was just arrested for DUI and told the cops to take him in the woods and shoot him in the head.  After that he gave a rendition of Springtime for Hitler.

    Republican standards (none / 0) (#46)
by NoviDemocrat on Fri Sep 14, 2007 at 11:40:52 PM EST
I know that you have to keep the standards pretty low on your side of the aisle what with all of the convictions your officials have been piling up later. That's why Tom DeLay isn't a crook because he hasn't been convicted of anything...yet. That's why David Vitter admits to being with a prostitute, which is a crime in every state but Nevada, but the Republicans turn a blind eye to his actions.

Not to worry, it looks like there's at least one more Republican Senator who may soon be facing criminal charges. Word is that the trail of bribes that includes Senator Ted Steven's son may extend back to the Senator himself:

    http://www.tpmmuckraker.com/archives/004185.php

and there's still several Republican Congressman who are a grand jury away from indictments for their involvement with Abramoff.

This is funny, coming from the Party of No Values.

"Who are you to judge us?!"

Look at all the Democrats running to support William Jefferson after they found $90k in his freezer... and raided his congressional office.  "How dare they search his office!$@$!@"

You want to talk about keeping the standards low... You're coming from the party of no standards, no values... "Who are you to judge".  All of the Democrat criminals and crooks are just people to look up to, after all.

When you let a drunken murderer like Ted Kennedy run for President... I think it says enough about your party.
