    Winning Back the House - It's a Full-Time Job

Holly Hughes is a go-getter. I think there are few people who would deny that. She seems to be perpetually on the run, heading from one thing to another.

That kind of tireless dedication is what will make her a tremendous member of the Michigan House of Representatives. Holly is challenging Mary Valentine, a Democrat from Muskegon with a troubling past and a more troubling voting record.

Valentine is exactly the type of tax raising, job exporting, government growing, ACLU-pandering liberal that we need to remove from Lansing. Taking back a majority in the House is one of the most important things Republicans must do in 2008 to ensure Michigan's future.

That makes the importance of electing Hughes even higher. Holly would be a strong advocate for the people of West Michigan and another defender of Michigan's citizens from the tax hiking, Michigan-destroying plans of Mark Shauer, Jennifer Granholm or Andy Dillon.

Unfortunately, Holly may have just a bit too much going on for her own good. She's also busy running for re-election as one of Michigan's representatives on the Republican National Committee. While these party positions do matter, who the National Committeewoman is is far, far, far less important than whether or not Republicans control the House.

    keep reading after the jump...

For those that may not know, that national committee members are important members of the party leadership structure. They are expected to be there whenever needed and called upon. That may be presidential candidate visits, victory center activities, other volunteer efforts and/or fundraising events. Keeping the White House is incredibly critical in 2008, and we need our national committee members out motivating the grassroots (and netroots!), raising money and making sure we win - from White House to State House.

Many, myself included, want to make sure Holly Hughes is one of those Republicans elected to the State House. That job will take her full, 110% energy. While it's a testament to Holly's character and drive that she wants to take on more, it may not be in the best interests of her endeavor to help us take back the House. The party position can take up a lot of time and make a lot of demands on a person - especially in a Presidential election year. Such tasks will get in the way of running for State Rep in a highly competitive district. Valentine barely beat former Republican Rep Dave Farhat in 2006; it's going to take a massive, full-time effort to win that seat back.

Point being, we need Holly to focus on winning her House race - and nothing else.

Let's make sure Holly Hughes is elected to the State House. Let her know that you'll help her in that race and want her to focus on winning it - and nothing else. Post your comments of support below, and we'll make sure they get sent to Holly (though I'm sure she'll see them herself right here at RightMichigan!).

Let's win back the House - it's what matters most for Michigan's future.

And I would challenge as many people as I can on this blog to work on a local race next year...

Yes, the Presidency is important, and, yes, so is the Senate...

But you can get coffee for a presidential campaign, or you can manage a house or county commission or judge race.  And get a lot more experience.  And make a lot more contacts.  And do a lot more good.

All the local offices in this state do much more to affect your future than anything the President or Congress can do.

They aren't as glamorous, they don't pay that much, but they matter... very much. Think about that today, on this Friday session.

Link to my comment where Nick deleted the previous comment that provided context. Nice try LX. I'm sure you'll have a future working for Karl Rove.

Winning back the House--Full time job-- (none / 0) (#7)

Having personally recruited over 23 people to run for the state house, managed over 5 competitive house district races and volunteered for HRCC for over a decade, I can attest to the fact it takes alot of time and money to run for office.  Have you Bailey?  I know what it takes.

Holly Hughes is and will continue to be one of the best committeewoman our great party has ever had. And she will be a great representative for Muskegon. I know "many" people as well who feel Holly has the know how and go getter attitude to carry on both positions. And no, her continue service to our party will NOT be a problem come election time. In fact it has helped with both fundraising and contacts.... Quit doing our party a disservice by critizing one of our party's fine leaders and focus on democrats.

This race is going to cost big bucks and do you know what kind of donors a committeewoman comes into contact with?  A lot who will donate money to her race.

Holly is great...but running for State Rep... (none / 0) (#11)

takes a full focused effort, especially when you are in a swing seat.  I worked with Holly on the Republican State Committee for several years and respect all the great work she does.  But, to run for state rep is a full time job.  If she wants to be a state rep then she owes it to your donors, volunteers and voters to be dedicated to it on a full time basis.
