House Democrat Tax Hike Update 2

    By Nick, Section News
Posted on Fri Sep 14, 2007 at 03:43:10 PM EST

Update [2007-9-14 18:19:21 by Nick]: The voting board is still open on HB 5194 with no change. There are still 14 Democrats refusing to vote, one Democrat voting NO and all 51 Republicans voting NO on new taxes.

And apparently Speaker Dillon isn't anticipating any success convincing his own caucus to raise taxes anytime soon. These photos were just snapped in the Speaker's Library at the Capitol.

Looks like Dillon's planning a slumber party!

Update [2007-9-14 16:1:52 by Nick]:Democrat Lamar Lemmons has joined the GOP in voting NO on new taxes. Way to go Representative and welcome to the fold! Democrat Rep. Lisa Wojno has also gone from YES to NOT VOTING YET. Is Democrat support in the House tanking this afternoon?

Rumor out of the Speaker's office is that he's setting up cots and sleeping bags to stage an all-nighter-photo-op. That's right... he actually considers it good politics to stage a photo op showing the press that the House Democrat is so fractured they're forced to stay ALL NIGHT! Think Dem "leadership" wishes they'd used the last nine months a little more judiciously?

The House is currently voting on House Bill 5194, a giant income tax spike that would take effect the right away... not next January or February.

The voting board has been open for well over an hour now as the Democrats scramble to get the 56 votes they need to pass it.

I'm THRILLED to announce that up to this point there are 51 out of 51 GOP votes AGAINST raising our taxes.  EVERY single Republican has voted NO on new taxes.  Rep. Green hasn't voted because he's at home with his family after the loss of his child.

Minority Leader Craig DeRoche is doing one heck of a job holding the caucus together and they're holding strong.

The Democrats who still haven't voted include:

Brown, Byrum, Clemente, Corriveau, Dean, Ebli, Griffin, LeBlac, Lemmons, McDowell, Polidori, Valentine, Simpson and Spade.

Looks like they're fighting amongst themselves for the two "get-out-of-jail free" cards.

If Jennifer Granholm and Andy Dillon are going to have their way and raise our taxes they're going to need to convince 12 of those 14 to cast a vote to kill Michigan jobs.

Props to the GOP caucus.  Keep fighting, guys.  Keep fighting.

    Tough Districts (none / 0) (#1)
by Republican Michigander on Fri Sep 14, 2007 at 04:58:23 PM EST
Simpson and Griffin have extremely tough districts in Jackson County. Byrum (Rural Ingham and Southernmost Lansing), Brown (West UP), Spade (Lenawee), Corriveau (Plymouth/Northville) and McDowell (East UP and Emmett County) have conservative leaning seats (if not necessary republican). Valentine has a swing district in Muskegon County. Ebli (Monroe), Dean (Grand Rapids), and Polidori (Dearborn) districts leans democrat but are not always gimmees.

Only Lemmons (Detroit), LeBlanc(Westland), and Clemente (Downriver) have solid democrat seats on that list. I don't know which LaMar Lemmons it was (There are three of them). If those three are honestly opposed to that, are they going to take one for the team, or will they stand their ground.

My money says Simpson and Corriveau get the get out of jail free cards. Rural Jackson IMO has a very strong populist streak. Corriveau is from Graholm's home district and is in big trouble unless the jokers in John Stewart's crowd causes trouble again.

It'll be interesting to say the least.

    Here's my remarks:

It is time to STOP pandering to liberals in the Democrat party and represent your constituents, as those in my district have elected you to do.

We in Jackson County can NOT afford a tax increase?  Have you filled up your tank in Jackson lately, where costs were recently as high as $3.25 a gallon, or filled a propane tank?  Residents are already leaving the state in droves and the Democrats now want to give them an encouraging push!

Democrats make a fine show of demonstrating mercy and compassion for those in poverty.  What about some of the same feelings towards those of us who PAY the taxes?  Why should we bear the brunt of misspent millions in Lansing?

Show some backbone and stand up for your constituents by voting against these regressive, damaging and excruciating tax hikes!

    Sincerely,

    Hey, I can dream.

    Jackson Co. (none / 0) (#8)
by NoviDemocrat on Fri Sep 14, 2007 at 11:28:21 PM EST
I wonder how Jackson Co. residents will feel about Mike Bishop's hit list? It would result in prison closing which means people who work in corrections are going to be laid off. Lots of people work for the state in corrections in the County. That sure is going to help the unemployment rates in the County. Or perhaps they'll be enjoying the cut back in city services as Jackson and the surrounding townships take a hit from the loss of state revenue sharing funds. If they're deep enough, the city will have to ask residents for a tax increase just to maintain the current level of services. I'm sure the local schools will also enjoy cutting back as funding gets whacked.

    Novi, I don't object to a tax increase... (none / 0) (#9)
by moderateme on Sat Sep 15, 2007 at 12:07:12 AM EST
I object to a tax increase when there has been no effort to reform.  If this state NEEDS $600 million, OK.  This state WANTS $1.8 billion.  Big difference.

I am a state employee who will be laid off in the event of a gov't shutdown.  I do care about state employees having jobs when all is said and done.  If  people are concerned about their jobs, maybe they should sacrifice their union (and all the dues they pay to it) in order to put $$ in their pocket and save the state $.  My state job is non-union and I seem to have no difficulty keeping it and getting fairly paid. Maybe teachers should give up their antiquated pension system and use the 401K that the rest of us do.   How many private sector, part-time jobs do you know who get provided with full health benefits?  You can work one day in a Sec of State district office and get benefits along with your union membership.  And this is nothing compared to the amount of money that has been squandered on Information Technology.  Go look at the Auditor General's reports for yourself.

Finally, I do care about my local community.  If I have to pay an extra $500-$1000 in taxes, I want it to go to MY municipality.  I don't need it going into the state and them deciding where it should be going.  I don't want to pay for your zoo, your library, or your museum.  If I want to visit, you can charge me at the door just like any other business would.  I want my money to go to building a park in my small community that MY kids can enjoy everyday.  I don't want to pay for yours with a DNR grant.  You pay for it.

I live in a rural area and quite frankly, I'm pretty tired of the cities getting more money.  Local gov'ts do have the ability to raise taxes and they shouldn't rely on the state to do their dirty work.

we have a campaign slogan for 08 - and a list of targeted precincts.

    The 14.

The fact that he shot this photo op at 3 in the afternoon shows how crazy this is.  It was a planned photo op - and it shows 14 Democrats who don't have the courage to either take a stand for what Dems say is "morally right" (or at least the far left blogosphere) and courage to stand up to Leon (for heaven's sake, if Leon scares you, you don't deserve the office of state rep, and even if he was scary that's your job), or the courage to stand up to their Party Boss Andy Dillon and say "No", this is wrong for my constituents and we disagree, I'm voting no (Republicans have voted against their caucus before, and while we criticize them, it is at least more honorable than this).  Either way, its 14 without courage.

Regardless of anything, we should point to this non-vote as a sign that these reps. aren't doing their job and making decisions.  If they voted no, they could force Andy to go back to the drawing board while there is TIME.  But if this drags on longer, its moving us closer to shutdown.  A Democratic shutdown, by the way.

The Party in control always gets to not call roll-call votes when it wants to "protect" its vulnerable members and can table issues thereby controlling the agenda - this may be a first where the controlling party has called a roll-call and couldn't get all the votes from its own side and it refused to shut down the vote.  There may end up being no vote "on the record," but there is a video and news record the non-vote, and that's where our focus should be.

I feel like we're in Oz and I have a bunch of tin-men and scarecrows running the show.

Democrats - the courage to stand for nothing and the time to sleep on it.

    so true.

It's been almost 12 hours that the board's been open.  Political cowardice of the highest order.

I'm a young guy.  I haven't been paying attention to politics for THAT long.  But I've NEVER seen a Speaker so completely befuddled and ineffective.

If you don't have your own caucus lined up at this point... wow.  Why hold the vote?  Why attempt it if you can't pull it off?

He claims he's worried about what will happen later in the Senate.  Sunshine!  Worry about YOUR chamber right now.

Complete impasse.  If the stakes weren't so serious it would be hilarious.

"I live in a rural area and quite frankly, I'm pretty tired of the cities getting more money.  Local gov'ts do have the ability to raise taxes and they shouldn't rely on the state to do their dirty work."

Spare me. I've seen the numbers. Oakland County is a donor county and our tax dollars are being shipped off to Lansing to pay for your roads and your schools and who-knows-what-else. You want to play that game and go back to the days when local dollars paid for schools and local communities were allowed to keep the various business taxes that state revenue sharing was supposed to replace? Hey, by all means, let's do it. When your taxes go up or your services go down (or likely both), you'll be wishing you had thought twice before asking for what you got.

The idea that you can run against someone on the basis of how long it took them to vote on this is a joke. 90% of the voters don't follow the insider baseball aspect of Lansing politics. Sorry, you would be lucky to find a majority who could even name their state rep. All of this is noise to them. They'll pick up the big picture stuff - taxes up, services down, etc. But the idea that they'll care about how long it took someone to vote is delusions caused by being in Lansing too often.

...you travel around in, but the people that I've spoken with are furious with our rep/sen over the games that they've been playing for all these months in regards to the budget.

Any low-grade moron knows that you can't spend more than you take in for any significant length of time, and that's what we have here today.

If you and those that you support feel that more money is necessary, than take a stand, go on record and raise taxes. Your constitutients will deal with you accordingly.

But this juvenile behavior being displayed by the democrats is seriously wearing thin.
