House Dem Tax-Hike Saturday Update 2

Update [2007-9-15 21:9:16 by Nick]:9:00 PM, Saturday. Still no change. Nothing happening. Crickets chirping. Dillon unable to wrangle 14 Democrats into supporting his $1.2 BILLION tax hike scheme. Republicans stills tanding strong.

Update [2007-9-15 18:15:50 by Nick]:They're still under a call of the House... rounding up absent members as Dillon twists arms in his own caucus to pass his job-killing $1.2 BILLION tax increase.

The business of the day was interrupted moments ago as it was announced that Jerry Lawler, the Director of the Legislative Council Facilities Agency, passed after a long battle with cancer.

Mr. Lawler had been at the Capitol for decades... a fixture in the legislature. If you think about it throughout the weekend and the week ahead, say a prayer for his family during this difficult time.

Update [2007-9-15 15:41:23 by Nick]:They've decided to give Rep. Green an exemption. Thank goodness. They're going to try to raise our taxes without him.

At 2:35 PM the House Democrat Majority, unable to get the votes they need from their own caucus cleared the board on HB 5194 and issued a call of the House.

In plain English that means that all State Reps must be in attendance, none are allowed to leave and if someone doesn't report in immediately the State Police will be dispatched to find them and "escort" them to the House Chambers.

    Looks like Dillon's getting desperate.

Would he actually send the Michigan State Police to Kevin Green's house while he and his wife grieve the loss of their child?

To force him to cast a NO vote on a tax-hike?

Is there a more heartless move the House Democrats could make?

    Cold.  Callous.  Soulless.  Despicable.

Michigan Democrats... the party that'll raise your taxes and send police after grieving parents struglling with the loss of their children.

They should all be ashamed of themselves.

Nice try! He gave the Republicans a chance to vote for the cuts. $1.7 billion in cuts. How many of your "brave" Representatives voted for it? Not one! Now what do you have to say?

Republican scam finally exposed (none / 0) (#6)
by NoviDemocrat on Sat Sep 15, 2007 at 07:10:32 PM EST
Now Michigan voters will get to see that the scam being run by Bishop and the House Republicans has been exposed. There never was any plan to support $1.7 billion in cuts. When given the opportunity to do so, the Republicans ran the other way.

"Democrats put Republicans on the spot by forcing a vote on a plan floated by Senate GOP leader Mike Bishop earlier in the week. It would balance the 2007-08 budget entirely with spending cuts.

The plan failed unanimously, with GOP lawmakers shouting furiously at Dillon for cutting off debate."

    Ah Democrat liar. (none / 0) (#7)
by John Galt on Sat Sep 15, 2007 at 07:41:18 PM EST
From the first paragraph of the article, the plan was to "narrow" the 1.7 billion deficit.  Not eliminate it.

Why do you have to lie, NoviDummy?

    Hahahahah (none / 0) (#8)
by Nick on Sat Sep 15, 2007 at 07:42:15 PM EST
Seriously, you're hilarious.  That's the best you've got?

Was there going to be ONE Democrat voting to support that today?  One?  If the Dems had put up the five votes needed then you'd have something to criticize.

Man alive the pro-tax-hikers are grasping at straws right now.

House Dems can't get 14 of their own members to support a $1.2 BILLION tax hike and the GOP is standing strong and united in defense of taxpayers.

I can't help but notice, too, that there's been no call by liberal activists and bloggers across the state to contact those fourteen Dem turncoats to tell them to support tax hikes.

What's wrong?  Losing your stomach for the fight?  Don't want your members voting to defend their tax-hike values?

Dillon's handling of this weekend and this debate has been one of the biggest clusters in Lansing history.  His SNAFU is going to go down as one for the ages... issueing a call of the House because he can't keep his own caucus together.  Unbelievable.

    More Democrat fraud? (none / 0) (#9)
by John Galt on Sat Sep 15, 2007 at 07:48:01 PM EST
    Wow Nick.

No bloggers calling out the liberal watchdogs on the 14 Democrat "abstainers"?

More Democrat fraud here.  NoviDemocrat can whine and moan about how evil Republicans are... but can't seem to write a single post on Liberal Lucy's or Commie Guru's blog to "call your representative" and "support your tax hikes now!"?

What a waste.  NoviDem, I really expected better from you.  What a fraud.

    This is hilarious (none / 0) (#10)
by NoviDemocrat on Sat Sep 15, 2007 at 09:59:26 PM EST
This is incredible. For weeks, you all have been going on about how we can balance the budget with cuts alone? $1.7 billion in cuts? No problem! House Republicans made the same claim. Senate Republicans also claimed that we could cut our way out of the deficit. Senator Mike Bishop even produced a plan and a list that he claimed would eliminate the deficit. For months, the Mackinac Center has been beating this drum.

So what happens when the Speaker gives the opportunity for House Republicans to put up or shut up? What happens when he gives them the opportunity to vote for $1.7 billion in cuts, the list of cuts created by Senate Majority Leader Bishop, the list of cuts you all said we had to make to save Michigan? They voted "NO". Every last one of them.

Confronted with the truth, that your gutless wonders in the House aren't willing to vote for their own list, the list of cuts that you all have been banging the drum to get enacted? Silence.

There's been some flailing about as Nick and JG try to deflect the issue. But I know that this is simply an effort to buy time to  figure out in your Republican brains how your heroes in the House could vote against the cuts that trumpted here. "No"? Every last one of them? That just doesn't make sense, you think. I'm sure an answer will come to you. I'm enjoying watching you all make sense of the Republican cowardice.

Stick with that, ND... stick with that (none / 0) (#11)
by Nick on Sat Sep 15, 2007 at 10:17:50 PM EST
You're missing the fact they all voted.  What's up with your 14 caucus members?  Why won't they put up their votes?  Are they afraid of Leon?  Afraid of Michigan taxpayers?  Afraid of Andy Dillon?

It must be frustrating to watch your beloved tax-hike caucus flop around like fish out of water unable to get a full fifth of them to even vote.

The House is controlled by the Democrats.  They're the "leaders."  But they can't get anything done.  That's a reflection of failed leadership.

They all voted No! (none / 0) (#12)
by NoviDemocrat on Sat Sep 15, 2007 at 10:29:46 PM EST
Nick, no matter how much you spin, how much you deflect, how many insults you hurl, there's no changing this simple fact: When given the opportunity to vote on Bishop's $1.7 billion in cuts, no one House Republican voted for them. Not one. After weeks of saying that we can balance the budget through cuts, the Republicans refused to follow through.

    I didn't realize the Senate had voted (none / 0) (#13)
by Nick on Sat Sep 15, 2007 at 10:43:11 PM EST
on those cuts.  Oh... they didn't.

Now take a good long look in the mirror, Novi.  When the Dems had their chance to vote on "new revenues" they've refused to even vote!

The Dem caucus is an unmitigated disaester right now.

    Those in glass houses...

Who said anything about the Senate? (none / 0) (#14)
by NoviDemocrat on Sat Sep 15, 2007 at 10:59:44 PM EST
I didn't know that the phrase "House Republicans" somehow included Republican Senators. Let's repeat it so there's no confusion on your part - not one of your Republicans in the House voted for the $1.7 billion in cuts. Not one. They had the opportuntity to vote "Yes" and they didn't.

Dillon called their bluff and Hosue Republicans turned tail like the cowards that they are. I don't expect this to be an issue in the Senate because Bishop doesn't have the guts to put his people on record in the Senate. What a fine day for Republicans principles. Not one vote. Embarassing.

    You're cracking me up tonight... (none / 0) (#15)

ND - NoviDem - same initials as NotreDame.  No offense, and a facade defense.

You know that the $1.7 billion "cuts" package you spoke about Dillon "offering" wasn't an offer - it was a stunt based on a lie.  The lie is that it was "Bishop's cut's".  The "cuts package" was a strawman invented by Dillon with what he thought were the worst possible cuts he could imagine out of the blue, mixed in with a few Bishop cuts.  It's a strawman.

If he's not even going to play in reality, and keep re-iterating the same junk... just ban his silly troll butt.

He wants to play "tag the Republican".  He can play that game on MichiganLibel with his Chairman Mao Brewer talking points.

The only thing he has is an article that says they voted against a bill to narrow the 1.7 billion deficit.  That Democrats voted against.  And doesn't say what was included.  Must've been some heavy school and union cuts to make Democrats vote no, too.

So ban the fricken troll already.

I know why JG wants me banned. His Republicans were caught voting against the cuts that they've been claiming they could make and exposing them for the hypocrites that they are. I understand, you don't want that to come to light.

As for Chet's claim that the $1.7 billion in cuts wasn't Bishop's list of cuts. Perhaps that's true. I haven't see the details on the proposal. But so what? You all said that the budget could be balanced with $1.7 billion in cuts. So Dillon put up $1.7 billion in cuts. And Republicans voted "no", every single one of them. But nooooo, we learn it's not that $1.7 billion in cuts, it's a different $1.7 billion in cuts as if you even cared what was being cut. What a joke!

No, the joke here is reading comments like this... (none / 0) (#23)

Perhaps that's true. I haven't see the details on the proposal. But so what?

Whether or not you get bumped is Nick's call. Right now, he's got more pressing matters to attend to than being on troll-patrol.

My $0.02 on the issue is to keep you around. The reason for this is two-fold.

First, it forces us to re-examine our positions on issues. A little introspection time and again isn't necessarly a bad thing.

Second, it also gives us a heads-up on the democrats speaking points that invariably come up after I see you post here.

This makes my job of stomping a mud-hole in the local democrats that much easier.

Glad that you acknowledged (none / 0) (#24)
by NoviDemocrat on Sun Sep 16, 2007 at 11:30:30 PM EST
that the Republican call for $1.7 billion in cuts was a joke. The fraud of that position has been exposed to all Michigan residents. Republicans demanded $1.7 billion in cuts, insisted that the budget could be balanced with $1.7 billion in cuts but when offered to vote on $1.7 billion in cuts, every single House Republican voted against them. Every one.

    Re-read my comments again. (none / 0) (#25)

The joke was you kvetching and moaning about the cuts, when you in fact acknowledged that haven't even read them yet.

It's one thing when there were cuts that were proposed on one side of the aisle. It's totally another when someone changes the list and then acts as if there's nothing new.

You should know better than that.

    Last time I checked (none / 0) (#26)

the House Republicans hadn't created any list of cuts. They claimed that the budget could be balanced with $1.7 billion in cuts. But they refused to vote for a measure that would do exactly that.
