Headline: Michigan Republicans Win Back House, Pick Up Seats in Senate

Governor Granholm and her flunkies in the state House & Senate are handing the Republicans a golden opportunity for the 2008 state elections.  With tonight's news (broken by our own Nick) that Senate Republicans offered what some might consider a reasonable compromise of $600+ million in new tax revenue from an increased income tax rate plus well over a billion dollars in spending cuts & reforms, the governor's flat out rejection makes it clear what the Democrats intentions really are.  Nothing short of a huge, jobs-killing hike in our income tax rate will satisfy the money-grubbing Democrats in our state legislature.

What impact will this have on next year's state House and Senate races?

There are those who frequent this blog who have a far better understanding of the political dynamics that will play out next year in state elections.  But if history is any guide, the Republicans should be well-positioned to take back control of the state House and expand their majority in the Senate.

In fact, it could be perhaps the exact opposite of what might well happen on the federal level where conventional wisdom tells us Hillary Clinton will win the White House and the Dems will increase their majorities in the US House and Senate.  And God help us all if that scenario is accurate.

In addition to having more of your hard-earned income confiscated by a greedy Lansing legislature, you can be sure the Washington Dems will fleece you for much more - especially if HillaryCare 2.0 ever becomes a reality.

Back to state politics...to date, the Republicans in our state legislature have done a commendable job withstanding significant pressure coming from the Left to hike our taxes.  They do not have the majority in the state House.  Yet because of their refusal to cast even one Republican vote in favor of the Democrat's jobs-killing tax hike, ten other Democrats (fearing they'll lose their jobs come November '08) are refusing to vote on the bill as well.  Hang tight state House Republicans.  Don't give an inch.

I've noticed a great deal of hand-wringing by the local (West Michigan) media concerning a likely government shutdown if Republicans don't cave and pass this tax hike.  My question is, so the state's non-essential employees are off the payroll for a while - and that's a problem because...???  After all, if they're considered "non-essential," why are we paying their salaries in the first place?  Looks like a great place to start cutting the budget to me.

Sure, I'm being a bit flip, but you cannot tell me there's no further fat to cut or reforms in spending to make.  And from the looks of it, Jennifer and her fellow Dems in the legislature have no plans to cut one dime or implement any cost-saving reforms.  Tax hikes ONLY.  There will be no further belt-tightening.

As far as I'm concerned, let the deadline pass and shut down the state government.  But just before and throughout the entire event, make damn sure the Republicans maintain a media blitz clearly explaining who is at fault for this stalemate.  Successfully do that and then be prepared to celebrate the Republicans regaining control over the state House and Senate come November 4, 2008.

In fact, victory for state Republicans over this issue may even result in handing our state's electoral votes to the Republican presidential nominee.  Perhaps voting Michiganders will be so fed up with Democrats and their tax-and-spend shenanigans by November '08, they'll see the wisdom of keeping the White House and US Congress in Republican hands.

    Well, there's always hope...

off to Iraq but I digress.

Maybe if Bishop actually put up $1.7 billion in cuts  or House Republicans actually voted for $1.7 billion in cuts, you might have a philosophical leg to stand on. But since they haven't, you don't.

Uh yeah, about that.... (none / 0) (#2)

...and "Mr. Compromise" Andy Dillon failed to vote for his own doctored spending cuts as well because???

And as much as I see DMOnline's POV, it coming to pass hinges on one critical item: This talk of backroom deals for a sales and/or income tax hike.

If Sen. Bishop sticks his guns and calls the Governor's bluff, then there should be a lot of welcome changes in '08. Michigan residents are fed up with the excuses coming out of Lansing on why they cannot live within their means, and a "shut-down", IMHO, will just blow up in the Guv & Co. faces.

But if he tucks tail and acquiesces to the spending demands of the democrats, then this will just reinforce the assertion that there is no real difference between a democrat and a Republican.

I will not tolerate such cowardice and have absolutely no qualms about throwing my support behind the recall of him and everyone else who sold out their principles (and hopefully didn't receive 30 pieces of silver for their "troubles" in the process).

Saul Anuzis should not only distance himself from such sleazy dealmakers (if they occurred), but also bring the hammer down (as well as publically supporting recalls for all of the RINO's/tax-spenders).

I want to be crystal clear on my opposition to any form of a tax increase.  I'm dead set against it.

But I'm also a realist who understands that the Dems own the governorship and state House.  Republicans can block bad stuff moving through the system in the Senate but they can't pass a budget with exactly what they want on their own.  At some point, there will need to be some form of compromise between the Governor, House and Senate.  Given the dynamics, some form of tax increase seems likely.  I hate the idea with a passion but to expect a balanced budget exclusively through spending cuts and reforms is unrealistic given those political realities.

The governor and her party are hell-bent on spiking our taxes upwards significantly with no real spending cuts or reforms.  Republicans want the opposite.  But the balance of power will lead to some kind of compromise.  No one will get precisely what they want in this circumstance.

Finally, if the Republicans stand firm and settle only for a modest increase in taxes but manage to get real spending cuts and real reforms in spending, I believe they'll be rewarded come November '08.

they support cuts when Bishop refuses to bring forward his plan for $1.7 billion in cuts. Why does he continue to refuse to bring forward a plan?

if they vote for a tax increase.

The Freep has an editorial begging the Republicans to cave in to the democrats and grandholm and vote for a tax increase with the promise that the dems will then talk about reforms.  That's a crock of doggie doodoo and everyone knows it.  The dems would have no reason to go back to the bargaining table if they get their tax increase.  They would just be laughing their asses off for bullying the Republicans into going for their plan.

If the Republicans want to win in the next election they better reform the way things are done in Lansing first before they even talk tax increase.

that the Senate GOP offered them a tax hike if the Dems would go along with $1.1 Billion in cuts just yesterday and the governor told Bishop to get lost because his tax hike was only a third the size she wants!

Then Bishop should offer up his $1.7 billion plan (none / 0) (#7)

and put it up for a vote by the Senate. Then we can see whether any Senate Republicans actually support such a plan. Who knows, maybe that's the plan the 10 Democrats in the House are waiting to see.
