Senate GOP doing something about phantom tax-hikeBy Nick, Section News
Remember when Jennifer Granholm, Andy Dillon and Mark Schauer blasted through a $1.4 billion tax hike last October only to find that their brand-spanking-new business tax carried with it a $900 million cost of compliance?
Job makers were appropriately outraged and demanded a change and the Dems finally gave in and replaced that portion of the tax with a different tax but only after weeks and weeks had gone by. Weeks when Michigan businesses were paying that $900 million compliance cost. Today the Senate GOP moved SB 999, a measure that would allow job makers to claim a tax credit for that wasted spending. Better late than never. The legislation moves over to the House now for consideration. Opening line on whether or not Andy Dillon even gives it a hearing? Two to one? Three? He'll probably "surprise" us all by acting on the darn thing so his members can say "hey, we voted to give businesses tax relief." Relief from a phantom tax they foisted on them in the first place. For the House Dems it'd be like shooting somebody, slapping a band-aid on the gushing wound and when the police arrived claiming "hey, I didn't do anything wrong... I tried to help!" Then again, Dillon hasn't even tried the first aid to this point. Suppose time will tell.
