Joe Knollenberg on Neil CavutoBy sdogg1m, Section Multimedia
I am not going to conclude that Joe Knollenberg has lost his mind but he embarrassed himself and Michigan on Neil Cavuto by defending the auto bailout.
First, he claimed that the money (25-50 billion) would not come from the US taxpayer. If the money is not coming from the taxpayer then who is it coming from? Second, Joe seems to think that if a US auto company goes bankrupt that people will stop buying cars. If you read rightmichigan.com Joe then I want you to understand that the American people will continue to buy cars even if it is not from a Detroit company. What many Americans are fed up with is the idea that we can subsidize failing businesses without further harm to the US economy.
If GM is going to go bankrupt then they will do so with or without a 25 billion dollar stimulus. The US auto companies have failed since the turn of century (8 YEARS JOE!) in figuring out how to turn a profit in North America. How will 25 billion dollars change that fact? Furthermore, the legacy costs attributed to bloated contracts by these auto companies will not go away. What guarantee does the America taxpayer have that the Detroit 3 won't blow through the cash and then come back for more? Also, Joe claims that these auto companies will damage the economy because their collapse will bankrupt suppliers. I am sorry Joe but many suppliers sell to an array of companies and not just one of the Detroit 3. The suppliers may have to cut workforce for a short period but once another auto company picks up the market share then those suppliers will get fresh contracts. Americans will still need automobiles even after an auto company goes bankrupt and thus makes your threat against the US taxpayer empty. Finally, the anti-common sense positions taken by our Republicans are part of the reason why they were voted out in 2006 and 2008. Joe, if you actually cared about the country and the Republican Party then you would stop calling for the US taxpayer to subsidize failing businesses. There are many businesses in this country that abide by sound practices and those businesses are not going to get a bailout if they fail. The Republicans need to STOP CALLING FOR BIGGER GOVERNMENT and picking winners and losers. GM, Ford, and Chrysler need to work in turning profit or they WILL fail but unfortunately at that time the US taxpayer will be on the hook for billions of dollars.
