Congressional races taking shape while Granholm / Cherry tie a steak around State's neck

How's that head feeling this morning?  It's rough, isn't it?  Almost makes you regret last night.  Assuming you remember anything that happened last night in the first place.  That much green beer will do that to you.  But don't worry, you found some way to make it home safe in the wee hours of the morning and that's something, now isn't it.

And it's not like you're the only one with a pounding headache this morning.  In fact, a pair of Michigan's Democrat Congressmen learned officially yesterday that they're going to have a serious headache on their hands from now through November.  The Associated Press reports that Bart Stupak and Sander Levin each received official word about serious challengers yesterday.

First, Sander's opponent.  According to the AP:

Bert Copple of Warren says he wants to challenge the Democratic congressman.

Copple served in Iraq with the U.S. Army and is the associate pastor of Evangel Ministries International in Roseville.

Stealing a page from the MoveOn.org playbook, apparently.  (No, I don't mean that to disparage Mr. Copple in any way.)  They love, lately, to find Iraq war vets and run them as Democrats on an anti-war ticket.  Mr. Copple's particular views on the current war with Islamic terrorism over in "the sandbox" may not be quite in line with George Soros's though.

Still, the challenger's got himself one heck of a tough race there.  Frankly, it's a more positive sign than many will realize that the Republican Party even has a candidate in the District.  Often times in those tri-county Congressional Districts it's a race against the clock to find anyone brave enough to put their name on the ballot.

State Representative Tom Casperson for his part made his first district bid official yesterday and if the Mining Gazzette's story accurately foreshadows his run then Stupak's in more trouble than he thinks.

In running for Congress, he said said he would strive to take "America back from an overbearing government" run by bureaucrats and fueled by partisanship.

"The people of Northern Michigan believe (American ideals) are under attack," he said in his statement. "I pledge to work with every ounce of my energy to renew the dream that is the American story."

Compare that to the constant coverage of the 24 hour news cycle that shows us nothing but Democrat "pastors" telling their flocks that America created AIDS to kill minorities and that the United States should be... ahem... gosh darned.  Compare that to the stark, recent memory of the likely Dem nominee's wife telling an audience that only now was she, an Ivy League educated lawyer and wife of a United States Senator, proud to be an American.

I get the sense that people in Northern Michigan are right when they say that American ideals are under attack.  A month ago things looked tougher for Casperson but mix that message with Stupak's far-left record and the potential dynamics of this race become very interesting.  Not that Stupak will admit that.

Longtime Yoopers will remember that Tom Casperson was never supposed to win his seat in the State House either.  He was a heeeeavy underdog.  But the guy's got something.  An intangible "it" that plays well up in God's country.

    Read on...

Casperson is one we can expect to hear a lot more of in the coming months.  All of the buzz thus far has been about the Mark Schauer's run against Tim Walberg and Gary Peters run against Jack Kevorkian.  Oh, and the incumbent and suddenly serious favorite-to-win, Joe Knollenberg.  The Dems think they've got a chance to pick up two... but that Stupak race is going to give them fits.

And speaking of the good doctor (read: sociopathic convicted murderer), the Oakland Press asked for a bit of reader input on the whole Dr. Death for Congress story and, bad news Gary, some of your voters still really like him.

"I think that Dr. Kevorkian would be an ideal candidate in the congressional race," wrote Ashley L., of Clarkston. "His experiences thus far in his life, whether it being his education, his years of tireless service to the people of this state as a Doctor, or even him humanely helping to end the suffering of our nation's terminally ill, show that he is selfless, determined and will work for the people of this state to give us real change.

"I think his honesty and candor would be refreshing for Michigan. I have been a supporter of his for years, and I would definitely support his bid for congress!"

No way that can be good news for the former Lottery Commissioner.  Between the paroled serial killer stealing his votes and that pesky Dennis Lennox holding his feet to the fire up at CMU Peters may be wishing he'd never left that lotto office.

And one good turn deserves another.  While the Party gets good news in metro Detroit and the UP, the State gets good news from the Governor Granholm and her boy John Cherry.  They're going to announce today the "potential" creation of 3,000 jobs.   Maybe 3,000 jobs.  Who knows, really.  But they think they've created 3,000 jobs.  Now go ahead and guess how they did it.  I'll give  you three chances but you'll only need one...

That's right, TAX CUTS!  The Detroit Free Press reports that there are $47.7 million worth of them being used to "create" these fancy new jobs.

Now, on the one hand, it's great that the Granholm and Cherry have finally come around and understand that cutting taxes leads to higher employment (though that always calls into question their insistence last year on raising taxes by $2.5 BILLION while the State continues to struggle through a recession).  But there's this one pesky little portion of the announcement that could really drive a guy crazy:

Nearly half of the new jobs will come from the expansion of operations at North American Bancard Inc., a growing Troy-based provider of credit card processing services. It plans to move into a bigger office in Troy, adding 1,500 jobs to its current workforce of 214.

Michigan offered the company tax incentives worth $21.6 million over 12 years to stay in the state. It had considered a $6.5-million package from Florida.

Let's put that in plain English.  There's a Michigan company.  It wants to move.  It will incur millions of dollars in expenses if it does move.  It's willing to incur those expenses.  Florida offers a $6.5 million tax deal.  For Michigan to trump $6.5 million in tax breaks along with potentially seven figures worth of moving expenses we had to give them $21.6 million!  That's more than THREE TIMES the cash Florida offered.

And we're their home State!  Boys and girls, that sort of deal wouldn't look good if you were still wearing those green-beer-goggles from last night.  And I have the sense that some of you still may be.

So mad props to the Granholm / Cherry / Dillon / Schauer leadership team for so badly screwing up Michigan's economy that we have to more than triple other state's offers just to keep our own people from leaving.  Geez.  That seriously burns me up.  It's like we're the nerd at school who has to bribe people to show up to his birthday party and then gives away his presents to keep them from leaving to go kick the can down the street.  Or watch paint dry.  Or whatever else they wanted to do more than hang out with us.

Reminds me of that old unfunny playground joke... "you're so ugly your mama had to tie a steak around your neck to get the dog to play with you."

    Pass the A-1.

    Casperson (none / 0) (#1)

It is nice to see that Casperson is interested in taking on Stupak. Outside of his pro-life stance, there is nothing in Stupak's voting record that I find appealing.

The last thing we need representing northern Michigan in the US Congress is an anti-business, anti-energy, pro-union, trial lawyer's lawyer.

Where can I pre-order some yard signs.
