while i don't know peters nor am i condoning his position at cmu, in the senate, or wherever, i will say there is this thing called "academic freedom" in the classroom.

the class here was clearly on break. peters during the class break provided his OPINION on a particular on-campus group--which he has every right to do. i hope you would agree (quite scary if you don't).

the other stuff? go for it. but your headline in this particular case in regards to this particular and specific situation is misleading and makes a mountain out of something that isn't even a mole hill.

    Gary Peters (none / 0) (#3)

I would have to agree.  Was it in a classroom?  Yes.  But it was clearly during a break, so it wasn't actually during a class.

say what you want, but there is enough questions now based on recent events at cmu to say gary peters is campaigning on campus and is misusing his professorship. you can't 'campaign on campus'

    Clarification (none / 0) (#6)
by studentsagainstgarypeters on Tue Mar 18, 2008 at 10:45:40 AM EST
It should be noted that Gary Peters isn't allowed to  espouse his partisanship on campus. As Dean Pamela Gates told constituents who wrote CMU complaining about his hiring:

"[T]he occupant of the Griffin Chair is expected to present ideas, issues, and information in a non-partisan mode ... no one is allowed to expound on his or her political stances in the classroom in ways that could be said to be intimidating to students taking the class."

Definition of "in the classroom" (none / 0) (#7)
by InksLWC on Tue Mar 18, 2008 at 10:53:59 AM EST
"In the classroom" does not normally mean in the room, but rather in the active classroom - thus, while on break would not be in the classroom.

On a side note to Nick, why can I not reply to some comments, but I can to others?

i understand wanting to nail peters, but this SPECIFIC incident isn't one worth slinging arrows over. it's tame. it's lame. there's nothing to it. nada. get over it. move on. accept it.

until there is such a time when we can program robots to subjectively spew out data and facts without any bias or emotion whatsoever, i guess we'll have to begrudingly put up with human teachers and begrudingly allow them to have personal opionions. lol...

meant to say "program robots...OBJECTIVELY," not subjectively.

nice way to support free speech (none / 0) (#14)
by whatever on Tue Mar 18, 2008 at 04:18:26 PM EST
that's a nice way to support free speech, ed ("shut the hell up!")

i'm glad you've spent time in a college classroom as a student. i've spent time there as both student and instructor.

hate to break it to those of you getting shorts in knots here, but teachers have a right to express personal opinions in the classroom. now: if teachers are saying "it's my way or the highway" or intimidating students or grading them according to if they align with the teachers philosophy of life, that's wrong and is grounds for students to take action.

but i have yet to see evidence in this specific case any of that happened.

don't be so hell bent to get at peters that you trample the constitution in your zealous haste to slap him.

good grief. breath deep. exhale. please.

    question (none / 0) (#15)
by whatever on Tue Mar 18, 2008 at 04:50:59 PM EST
it's also not clear whether these students, during break, asked peters for his opinion. i assume the students that reported this were the two (or one from the two) that were in the classroom during the break (?) and if they dutifully reported the incident it sounds like they have an agenda to begin with...which makes this entire specific episode rather questionable as per the claim the headline is making.

again, i'm not supporting peters. there seems to be enough meat in the entire situation, enough to question, without having to really go out on a limb and stretch on this one particular situation. doing so damages the credibility of those going after peters--not the other way around.

i mean, just a few days ago there was a link to a story showing peters walking down stairs at cmu and headline (if i remember right) chiding him for not answering questions. today he apparently responds to some students during a break in class and he's a bad guy for that. make up your minds!

    Whatever (none / 0) (#16)
by Ed Burley on Tue Mar 18, 2008 at 06:46:16 PM EST
Gee, I guess all the time I spent earning my Masters degree doesn't count for anything when it comes to the all wise Whatever. He has expressed his personal opinion in class, all the while allowing all of us little people to share our opinions.

Look Donut-Man, let me put it straight to you. I have 3 adopted African-American children, two bi-racial foster children, an adopted Hispanic White, and 3 biological Hispanic-Whites, AND an African-American son-in-law who I introduced to my daughter (he was a co-worker, and I thought he was a great guy). But, with all that, I was told, in no uncertain terms, that I was a RACIST - simply because I was born with peach colored skin - er, "white" skin.

When I objected, I was told that my denial proved that I was a racist. I couldn't help it. ALL white people are racists. That's the fact, and there's no way around it. Now, as a white racist, I have two choices: remain a racist, OR be a racist trying to "change the system."

There was no debate allowed; only condemnation. The professor's 3 graduate assistants included an African-American woman who insisted that, no matter what, I was a racist. The white homosexual professor (and before you jump on me, he wore his orientation on his sleeve, openly talking about it, and condemning ALL heterosexuals as homophobic) and the two white lesbian grad students both admitted to being racists who were trying to change the system.

Does that sound like free and open exchange of ideas? Does that sound like "free speech"? Hardly. It sounds like "my way or the highway." It's the way it is in grad school in the state universities. The few professors that allow you to speak your mind have read, and agree with, Horowitz's book about the Liberal, and dangerous, professors.

by whatever on Tue Mar 18, 2008 at 08:44:25 PM EST
the situation you describe isn't acceptable. doesn't matter if it's a liberal doing it or a conservative.

painting entire populations with a single brush because of your personal negative experience isn't the answer, either. i'm sorry you had to go through that. that is indeed bs.

Bias on both sides (none / 0) (#20)
by InksLWC on Wed Mar 19, 2008 at 12:13:14 PM EST
What we have to remember here is that sure, Peters has a bias, but I'm sure that the students who reported the incident do as well.

I'm not defending Peters, but we don't have a video of what happened inside that classroom, so anything that we assume is just speculation.
