Michigan is ranked one of the best managed in the nation - huh?

(Promoted by Nick... either congrats to us or woe is the rest of the nation... not quite sure which...)

Cross posted from Save My Michigan

    Oh.  My.  Hell.

According to the "States & Governing Magazine", Michigan is ranked #3 in the nation for "Michigan's ability to manage well during a crisis".  I'm not kidding, folks - you can get the lo-down here...

For entertainment purposes, let's take a look at a few quotes Jennifer Granholm made in this, uh, PR stunt?

"Year-in, year-out we want to ensure that we are spending tax dollars efficiently and in a way that provides the service citizens need and depend upon,"

"We appreciate the recognition from Pew and Governing magazine that even in tight budget times, we have made improvements in the way we operate state government."

This is absurd. A mockery. This would be like giving an award to FEMA for their outstanding ability at management during the Katrina crisis! What's next - Rebecca Humphries recieves the "Outstanding Director of the Year Award"?

The sheer ridiculousness of such award just about makes me speechless.  Michigan can manage so well under economic hardship that the unemployment rate is still the highest in the country?  We are "managing" so well that we have been in a one state recession?  We are managing so well that the DNR can lose and find money within months?

This is outrageous!  If this is the best example that can be made to other states of how "good management" works, then this nation is truly in for some big trouble.

    Are these people smoking crack???

I noticed that they steered away from that tax hike, er, I mean revenue enhancement to balance this year's budget (OABTW thank you, Sen bishop).

I can't wait to see what's next: Kwame Kilpatrick nominated for the highest morals among big city mayors?

Apparently there isn't any downgrading done for helping to create the crises in the first place.

    RE:     Thank you

Today, I've been invited to Washington DC, one of only two governors whose states have been singled out by Governing Magazine.  Michigan is being recognized as a prime example of a state that has managed itself well during an economic crisis.  Governing Magazine does a survey every two years of all of the states, reviewing their ability to perform and manage.

Michigan improved in three of the four categories in their survey, making us tied for the fourth best-managed and run state in the country.  This is due to your efforts - you, who have done incredible work during the toughest economic circumstances of any state in America.

Thank you for your excellence, your teamwork, your integrity.  Thank you for being a public servant, especially now, when Michigan citizens need us most.  I've never been prouder to serve alongside you.

If you have co-workers who don't have access to e-mail or voice-mail, could you share this great news with them - maybe post it on your division bulletin board?  Thank you for helping to spread the news!

It's not just Michigan whose Pew report is whack.

I work for another midwestern state as a contractor (part of the Michigan diaspora after the services sales tax made me shut down my business).  I barely recognize my employer based on that Pew report.

"Surely you jest?" you ask? Nay, say I.

The survey gave extra brownie points for raising taxes. Michigan was the unchallenged cham-peen of that last year, so the survey should have said: "We're Number One! We're Number One! (in raising taxes."

It's "weakness" to buck the government employee unions and tax-eating special interests with their rippling political muscles by opposing tax hikes that feed them more of the private sector's sustenance, but "courageous" to surrender to their political blackmail and threats by raising taxes. I know that's true because every newspaper in the state says so.

I guess there is a parallel universe out there. It is in the nether world between Liberal stupidity and self delusional thought. I think we know the names of the more prominent residents.
