House Democrat Obstructionists: Part 2--Rollback of Dem Income Tax Hike

Yesterday we talked about Obstructionist of the House Andy Dillon's refusal to allow a vote or even a committee hearing on a series of Republican bills designed to assist homeowners struggling under the weight of Jennifer Granholm's economy.

What with today being tax day it only seems appropriate that we shift our focus onto efforts dealing specifically with the fruits of Dillon's labor, the massive tax hike he and his Dem cronies rammed through the House last fall after shutting down the State government for the first time ever.

House Republicans yesterday held a press conference to call attention to their attempts to force an up or down vote on legislation aimed at rolling back last year's income tax hike.  Representative Phil Pavlov is scheduled to drop the bill today.  They'd like to see the rate moved from 4.35% back to 3.9% where it was before the Dems got their grubby little paws on it.

When you do the math that'd come out to about $300 a year for the average Michigan family.  Heck, when you think about it in those terms it's like doubling the federal "stimulus" package that's hitting mailboxes now.  Except this time it'd actually be based on taxes paid which is always a good thing.

Not that you'd get that vibe from the do-nothing Democrats in the House of Representatives.  They're pretending this issue doesn't exist and hoping it'll go away.  They claim it's just not feasible.  That the rollback of their precious tax cut would blow a massive hole in the budget.  Give them enough time and you'd probably hear them echo Granholm's old arguments that schools would close and sick people would die.  Which begs the question... if it's that rotten an idea then obviously it'd go down to defeat... so why not hold the vote?

The answer, obviously, is that it'd put their members in a tricky situation.  Who wants to go on record voting against a tax cut right before an election... especially when there's more than enough savings waiting to be picked from the low branches.

The House Republicans aren't just proposing we blow a hole in the budget.  They've got a giant list of pretty common-sense and imminently doable cuts and reforms that'd wipe the red ink right out of the budget.

    Read on...

POSSIBLE CUTS AND REFORMS to offset the income tax hike include:

  • Use the remainder of the 2007 budget surplus ($200M)

  • Save on state employee salaries by offering early-out options, and only replacing 6 out of every 10 employees who qualify for early out ($300M)

  • Limit the length of time an able-bodied person may sit on welfare without working to four years ($51M)

  • Currently enacted welfare reform sunsets before this limitation could take effect.

  • Implement the Senate reform plan to privatize some aspects of prison services, transportation, and audit for waste ($50M - $70M)

  • Reduce revenue sharing for the City of Detroit ($50M)

Detroit currently receives half of all revenue sharing, yet the city cannot account for how taxpayer dollars are spent.

  • Create a Medicaid Inspector General to root out fraud ($25M)

  • Reduce funding for the mismanaged Detroit Community Mental Health ($20M)

  • Cut the Dept. of History, Arts and Libraries budget ($10M)

  • Cut the Dept. of Information Technology budget ($10M)

  • Reform mass transit by making routes more efficient ($10M)

  • Cut money the state provides for horse racing prizes ($10M)

  • Remove 19-and 20-year-olds from Dept. of Community Health ($9M)

  • Cut the Legislature's budget ($1M)

Total: $746 million in spending restraint, cuts and cost-saving government reforms.

The House Democrats are standing in the way of a vote and look ready to refuse to even give the issue a hearing.  Not sure if they've noticed but Michigan's economy could use the boost and families could certainly put their own money to good use.  So why the obstruction, Andy?

Let their resistance and obstuction be the issue. Take the case to the people. Hammer at it and do not relent. Push the case for tax and spending cuts and continue to focus on the waste in state governement fostered and enabled by the Granlarceny administration. The more people understand that not only are the Democrats taxing the public much more then is neccessary but they are wasting up to or over half of every dollar that is needlessly collected then it might get through. The Democrats need to be thrown out of office and Granholm needs to be recalled. We must make this case to the people as Reagan did so many times when he was faced with an obstructionist Democrat Congress. He won and so can we.

Why is it that these cost reductions just make way too much sense?  Even modest cost reduction initiatives for government employees modelled on the the new UAW contracts with the automakers would reap huge savings over time with minimal impact to present day workers.  I guess like any addiction, you have to admit you have a problem first, and our state has a spending problem.  Too bad that the Democrats won't admit that there is any problem at all on that side, instead we just don't seem to be paying enough to suit them.
