Do not forsake me oh my darling...By Nick, Section News
Will today be the day? Yesterday sure as heck wasn't.Yesterday marked the three month anniversary of the Senate's approval of a state ban on partial birth abortion modeled after a ban that's already passed SCOTUS scrutiny. You remember partial birth abortion. Babies. Stabbed in head. Brains sucked out. Skulls crushed. Yeah, not pretty. On January 23rd the Michigan Senate approved SB0776 and sent it to the House. It has lingered there now for a full quarter of a year, stuffed unceremoniously into the House Judiciary committee by a "pro-life" Speaker of the House. Understandably, Right to Life of Michigan had had enough and decided they weren't going to take it anymore. With a House chamber that boasts anywhere from 68 to 70 pro-life members, an overwhelming, bi-partisan majority passage of the ban is all but guaranteed... assuming it ever sees the light of day. So RTLM planned and they organized and they picked yesterday, April 23rd, 2008 to show up in force at the Capitol to ask the elected officials who happily boast the RTL endorsement to earn it by voting to save a few babies' lives. Hundreds of them packed the gallery watching and waiting. How did the Obstructionist of the House Andy Dillon (D-claims-he's-pro-life-but-doesn't-vote-that-way) and his majority Dem caucus handle their arrival? They ran and they hid. Literally. No hyperbole. They got the heck out of dodge. The Dems went into caucus for hours in an attempt to wait out their constituents. Better to close the door, turn out the light and pretend you're not home, right? Read on...
And I couldn't help but think back to one of my all-time favorite movies, High Noon. Gary Cooper plays a sheriff, of course, in a small western town who finds himself about to face a gang of killers and hoods bent on nothing more than killing him.
Shouldn't be a problem, though. The sheriff had a lot of friends in the town and had formed posses before so he tries again but suddenly the men he thought were his friends find themselves turning yellow. No one helps. It's one of those films that affects me more viscerally than others. I can watch it a million times but I always wind up squeezing the arm rest of the couch or sitting on the edge of my seat. One scene in particular always upsets me the most. Cooper goes to the house of an old friend to ask for his help and the man sends his wife to the door, instructing her forcefully to lie and tell the sheriff he's not at home. He doesn't even have the guts to look his friend in the eye. He hides. Talk about an act of cowardice. We watched the same thing on the floor of the Michigan House yesterday. There's a posse in that chamber that claims proudly to defend innocent life. Well push has come to shove. The bill is before them. Sitting there. Children's lives are literally at stake. The sheriff came to the chamber yesterday and the cowards shut themselves in a room and pretended they weren't home. Unfortunately for Dillon and the rest of the cats with wobbly knees, this isn't a problem that's going away. Today is high noon all over again. If they don't act it'll be next Tuesday when they return to session. Then Wednesday, then Thursday and every day after that. Any time that posse wants to grow a spine the rest of us are ready and waiting.
