Grabbing some numbers from Census bureau site and also a quick grab from educationreport.org..

$5,967,918,000 this... is the amount paid in wages to public school teachers in Michigan (fiscal year 2005-2006)
$2,743,465,000  this... is the amount paid in Benefits to public school teachers in Michigan (fiscal year 2005-2006)

$3,185,199,000 this... is the amount paid in wages to public school support staff (Lunchroom ladies, joe the janitor etc..) in Michigan (fiscal year 2005-2006)
$1,514,265,000  this... is the amount paid in Benefits to public school support staff (Lunchroom ladies, joe the janitor etc..)  in Michigan (fiscal year 2005-2006)

Michigan teachers earned about $57,000 for the same fiscal year.. $26,000 (roughly, according to the census relationships shown above) again for added benefits. (numbers do NOT include operational costs..  only wages and bennies)

Ok.. Story is told.. but questions remain...

    1. out of the benefits, retirement standard of 6% of income? $3420
    2. health package over 20K a year? Could this be right?

Follow the money..  Where does it lead? Who controls it?
