Sen. Ray Basham: "Smoking cigars sadder than troops dying."

State Senator Ray Basham (D-Big Brother) is best known in Lansing for his crusade to ban things. Like soda pop in schools and smoking in public. But in today's Detroit Free Press, Basham expresses his belief that soldiers in Iraq smoking cigars is sadder than soldiers being killed!

    Read on...

You see, Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard's deputies confiscated thousands of counterfeit Cuban cigars during a drug bust back in January. Bouchard decided to send the 3,700 high quality stogies to the troops in Iraq rather than destroy them.

Senator Basham objects in today's Freep, saying, "It is sad that troops are being killed in Iraq, but it's even sadder that someone would send cigars, which is also a killer."

What a totally idiotic statement! Would the family of a dead soldier agree? Would they be sadder if they found out that their son or daughter had puffed a cigar than if they found out their loved one had been killed?

I sure doubt Senator Basham (D-Totalitarian Prohibitionist) actually means what he said. But his statement serves as an example of how extreme nanny-politicians like Basham are in their belief that government can, and should, run your life and your body.

the benefit of the doubt far too often.

If this idiot didn't mean exactly what he said why didn't he take it back right away?  Because he had to know as soon as he shut that garbage trap of a mouth of his that he'd just said one of the dumbest things in the history of the English language.

As a guy with two friends who just got back from the sandbox, three more who just arrived in-field and a brother prepping at West Point I'd like to tell Senator Basham where, precisely, I'd like the good Sheriff to stick those cigars... and hey, Basham should be happy about it too because I'll give you a hint... at least one of them wouldn't wind up in Iraq.

Unless they are trick cigars like on Bugs Bunny... (none / 0) (#2)

One cigar isn't going to kill anyone, unless it's a Bugs Bunny cigar. Most people I know who smoke cigars don't smoke many of them. I used to smoke them myself until the financial crunch hit me. They are expensive. It takes a long time to smoke one. These aren't everyday things. Cigars are much less addicting than ciggies as well. No they aren't safe if you smoke a lot of them, but driving ain't safe either.

I'm glad Bouchard sent them over to Iraq. They've certainly earned cigars for their work. I don't think a lot of the smokers or occasional smokers are going to turn them down either. Bouchard's going to be more popular over there for this.

As far as Basham goes, he needs to shut the hell up. You can quote me on that.

Sounds to me as if this man is a typical nanny state drone. I am beginning to think that the Borg created on the old Star Trek Next Generation series was modeled on Democrats. They all mouth the same tripe so they must be connected by some cerebral implants that allow them to speak with at the same time. Resistance is futile seems to fit right in with the Liberal Socialists Neo- Communist theology of these idiots.

Soldiers smoking the occasional stogie sad? Give me a break. If anything, it's going to help them deal with any stresses over there. Yes, that's right kids, smoking a cigar is actually a relaxing activity.

Hey, what do I know though, it's not like I'm not in the military or anything...

What the heck is Bouchard smoking?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (none / 0) (#5)

Bouchard (and his ilk) is what is sad for our military.

Bouchard isn't behind our troops, he should stand in front of them. "You can quote me on that."
