    Lest ye be judged....

Judicial races should be partisan elections. Here's why....

Judicial races can be pretty squirrely. Folks can run on a "non-partisan" ticket and get elected because of their name, family or other arbitrary factors that have no bearing on how they will rule from the bench.

We have seen that in Livingston County when a liberal anti-war activist was elected 2:1 over a known conservative republican.

I understand why these positions were meant to be non-partisan, but with judicial activism that has taken hold of this country, it may be time for a rule change.

Unless we can take back our benches from these activists, I would at least like the folks on the bench sharing my world view. Since they hide under the cloak of not disclosing how they would rule on such hot button issues as abortion, it is hard to know where they are coming from philosophically.

This is another area where local elections make all the difference. There are rumors that the liberal judge we elected in Livingston county just two years ago may already be headed to the Michigan Supreme Court. Folks made the argument when we elected her that she was nice and couldn't do much damage in Livingston County.

    Look out.....

Please, please, please, find out who these judicial candidates are and vote for those who will uphold our constitution and not the "interpretations" of the constitution. Please elect judges will have the courage to rule against political correctness when it is the right thing to do.

If we don't take our courts back, we may find ourselves at the mercy of the Men (and women) in black.

The problem is Ignorance more than partisanship (none / 0) (#1)

Partisan or non partisan, the problem is that most people are ignorant on judicial races. Brennan, that's a good Irish name..... The partisanship is in there because Republicans are less apt to support judicial activism while democrats are more apt to do so. Unfortunately, that was not communicated well in the last election.

Now many, even in our own party, let their political jobs conflict with the party and supported an extremely left wing democrat. Some liked Brennan since she was rather anti-defendant and pro-developer. Others didn't want to make her mad because their township had dealings with her - so they make the job 100 times tougher. Some just didn't care for the other candidate. I can at least respect the last point by some, as that is a valid reason for opposition. I was told time and time again by some that this was a "DISTRICT Judge" race. Yes, I know. District judges have very limited activist control because they are bound by circuit and appeals precidents, as well as the State Supreme Court and SCOTUS precident. But the ranks of Appeals and Supreme Court justices come from the district ranks. Combine that with former Supreme Court justices with the last name of Brennan. People vote for Brennans. Tom Brennan was one of the most well known justices, and a conservative. I'd vote for Tom Brennan in a minute if he came out of retirement.

Justice Cavanaugh was once a district court judge. That's another well known name.
Justice Weaver was once a probate judge.

A judge can not say how they would rule on a issue, but a judge can make known his/her philosophy. A judge also has prior actions that he/she can be judged on as a window to see what the stance is.

I want to see judges with sound mind, sound temperment, and sound philosophy so they are not the third legislative branch.
