Dem spending creates monster new budget deficitBy Nick, Section News
Remember last fall when the State was facing a massive budget deficit and the Governor teamed up with Mark Schauer and Andy Dillon to ram through a couple of equally massive tax hikes? Remember the promises that they were "balancing the budget" and that they were fixing the problem for the future? Yeah, so much for that. The Ivory Tower reports this morning that we're about a half-billion dollars in the red. Again!
In all, a weak economy and tax credits will leave $430 million less for Gov. Jennifer Granholm's proposed 2008-09 budget than previously expected, according to the fiscal agency. And I can't help but wonder... if these new movie projects and spending programs were supposed to "create jobs"... because that's what you always hear from the lefty politicians in this State... every big new government program will "create jobs..." where are they and why isn't the extra tax revenue they're generating solving these budget problems? Why another giant deficit? Unquestionably this could bite the Democrats hard in November. It seems like just yesterday they were shutting down state government for the first time in Michigan history and they took a PR beating for it. October 1st is still a whole summer away but there are two things to keep in mind:
1) Four months is a long time... for the deficit to potentially balloon further. If revenues don't magically start rolling in over the summer the Dem House Majority is going to face one heck of an ugly choice. Raise taxes again or admit they were wrong and cut spending, something they've spent the last 16 months swearing to high heaven would wind up killing seniors and kicking poor little Johnny out of school. It's an ugly bed they've made. The worst part is it's all of the normal folks who have to lie in it.
