    Buckle Up For Big Brother

(Promoted by Nick because... well... this is one of my biggest pet peeves in the history of history.)

You've probably seen the commercials, reminding you that the government is starting its annual campaign against individual liberty know as "click It or ticket."  Every year local law enforcement agencies -- under a much broader (allegedly $500 million per year) campaign -- take a week to aggressively crack down on motorists who choose not to wear their seat belt.  Yes, adults who make the conscious decision that affects only them.

I find it extremely hypocritical that a police officer, riding a motorcycle (which is nearly 40 times as deadly as a car according to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration statistics) officer can pull you over and fine you for not decreasing your likelihood of death or serious injury as much as bureaucrats deem sufficient.

Evidence supporting claims that seat belt usage prevents serious injuries or fatalities is completely irrelevant to this issue.  The government has no moral authority, no Constitutional authority, and no practical means to intervene in the lives of individuals who are not violating the rights of others.

Federal and local governments spend millions of dollars running TV and radio ads, and putting up ugly signs like the one in the image above, being updated to remind us to that the law applies regardless of what time it is.  During these week long events, a significant portion of the police force is diverted, in order to set up "check points"  where they visually inspect every car that passes to ensure the driver and passengers are wearing seat belts.  Failure to do so results in a $65 citation.  This is especially troubling in cities such as Detroit where the police can't keep up with real crime.

If they already have the power to do this, it's only a matter of time before they control every aspect of our personal lives in order to "protect" us from ourselves.

    Amen to that.

Its good to know I'm not the only one that this sort of thing irritates.

    $500 million a year?  Unbelievable.

Now I understand why the economy in Michigan is in the shape that it is in. Thanks to Jenny No Jobs it was all part of a master plan. Just heard on the radio that the seat belt check lanes expect to be successful because the threat of a $65 ticket is a good incentive to comply in the current economic climate. So, Liberals tax the beegeezus out of the entire state in order to kill business, destroy jobs and the lives of the citizens that held them all for the sake of making us wear our seat belts and be safe. The problem is because of the policies of Liberals in Michigan and Washington DC nobody will be able to afford to drive anyway so there should be no problem. Once again we see how clear thinking Liberals will go to great lengths to keep us all safe not matter what they have to do to achieve their goals.

    This isn't about safety, but $$$ (none / 0) (#3)

This is where LEO's (Law Enforcement Officers) become REO's. Revenue Enhancement Officers. The counties and municipalities get more money from tickets into their coffers, and most state reps come from municipal governments. Add those jerkoffs in the insurance lobbies, and they get legislation like this making the seatbelt a primary offense where you can be pulled over instead of a secondary offense, and we get more and more laws like this causing the law in general to lose my respect.

Well it is well known that... (none / 0) (#4)

Liberals, Labor and Lawyers have totally ruined the United States of America and has turned Michigan into a waste land. Look at the Chief Liberal Lawyer that panders to labor and I rest my case. Good old Jenny No Jobs.

and you have a sure fire winner for both the insurance industry (one that is granted monopoly status not by the free market but government)

because it is all John Engler's fault that Michigan is in the precarious economic state it is in. Doesn't raising taxes AND spending money balance the economy? According to the left, why yes. But it is not working so it has to be Engler's fault! My goodness it is so obvious.

...by Republicans on the state and federal level.

Aside from this being a naked money grab, I fail to see anything that authorizes congress to promote such a program.

I also fail to see why state officials are so approving of a program that expands the scope and size of government.

... that gets to the truth of the matter?  We just reedit the obnoxious seatbelt PSA's, with a more honest tagline attached.

VO: "Click it or ticket.  We know what's best for you, so shut up and do what you're told."
