The MSM and MDP suddenly OK with China? Since when?By Nick, Section News
Now why couldn't that have been the Ivory Tower's take back during the fall of 2006? Tom Walsh has a column in the FREEP this morning hot on the heels of yesterday's Michigan appearances by Senator Barack Obama. He rakes him over the coals pretty good for his unhealthy disconnect on the whole "economy" thing and defends business people who are successfully selling their products overseas.
Disappointingly, but not surprisingly, Obama pandered in the Democratic Party primaries to labor unions and others in the party base who blame low-wage foreign countries for stealing American jobs. He vowed to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement and he whined about China's currency. On Monday in Michigan, he tried to have it both ways. When he was in Flint he said one thing then when he took the stage later he had something else to say. NAFTA either gave us the SHAFTA or it is pretty cool. We're either going to unilaterally change the multi-nation trade pact without consulting our global neighbors or the biggest problem over the last eight years is that the President acts unilaterally without consulting our global neighbors. Just depends on who the man's speaking to and what they want to hear. Sort of like how Jerusalem must remain the undivided Capitol of the Israeli state when he talks to AIPAC but division and a `negotiated' solution floats his boat after the terrorist group Hamas criticizes his speech. But what do I know... I'm just a goofy Michi-ander. There's more so please read on...
Walsh's take is right on the money if only a couple of years too late. Now, here in 2008, the FREEP is OK publishing a column that praises a Michigan company for making the decision to sell products overseas because, shock of all shocks, when products are sold overseas it creates jobs right here at home.
Apparently this is a new take for the newspaper that twice endorsed Jennifer Granholm. In 2006 there was this cat running for Governor who'd taken his own company global and moved serious weight in China to the tune of an estimated four-hundred new high paying Michigan jobs. But no, we can't have that. New jobs in Michigan? Bah. The issue was daily fodder for the Ivory Tower and it's lefty brethren in the MSM, hyped to great effect by Mark Brewer-San. Michigan Democrats didn't much care for the big C. (China, not cancer, though they might as well have been synonymous with MDP.) Interestingly enough, the Barackstar likes China plenty. His campaign is this week hosting two giant fundraisers with top tier foreign policy guests in the communist utopia. Attention Michigan Regressisphere! I'm calling you out! Please decry Obama's decision to raise campaign cash in China. And not just here in the comments section... on your own lefty blogs. Rake the man over the coals every day. He's hoping his campaign will profit by taking money out of China and bringing it home to America. Which is what Dick DeVos did by expanding his Michigan business overseas. To your great daily disdain. The only difference? When DeVos did it it created 400 Michigan jobs. Obama's move will only pay for a couple seconds of annoying advertising time. Consistency baby. Try it. Please? Maybe I've missed it. Maybe I was sleep walking through the last twenty-eight years of my life. But I'm having the toughest time coming up with any examples of the left trying that approach in the past. Just don't seem to make much rational sense these days. Speaking of a lack of rational sense, folks wonder why the Big 3 are consistently hurting and forced to cut wages and jobs? The Associated Press reports that Ford will be closing the Michigan Truck Plant in Wayne for 9 weeks starting this August. That's up from the five weeks they were planning on shuttering it earlier this year. But never fear, it's only the company itself that's going to get soaked by the work stoppage.
That's a good deal if you can get it. Nine weeks of extra, bonus paid vacation? Where do I sign up? After the stress of the 04 campaign I swore up one side and down the other that I was through with politics and that I was going to find myself a nice factory job somewhere. Of course I had "the bug" and I'm still involved in campaigns and elections but geez louise, you read something like that and a guy gets to thinking he missed his calling in life. Well, either factory work or "service" as a Detroit Public Schools administrator. The Detroit News reports this morning that they had the audacity to submit a budget to the school board with... get this... a $408 million shortfall. (They're figuring they'll have fewer than 100,000 students for the first time since 1917!) Apparently DPS admins didn't do very well in math class. When you have X number of apples you can't eat X + 408,000,000 of them. It's impossible and not just because it'd give you one heck of a stomach ache.
"I wouldn't be releasing a budget like that," said school board member Marie Thornton. "I think they need to stay up around the clock until they come up with a realistic, balanced budget." The district receives just under $10,000 per pupil, among the tops in the state. But while everyone else in Michigan figures out how to stretch far fewer education dollars the good folks at DPS claim they need four-hundred-and-eight million more of them? What sort of lesson is that teaching Detroit's kids?
