    Friends,
I wanted to take a moment and let you know what your House of Representatives was up to yesterday. With gas prices well over $4 a gallon, the Democratic Majority decided to push legislation through Congress.

What did they feverishly work to pass?

Designating the Washington-Rochambeau Revolutionary Route as a National Historic Trail.

Yes, after waiting 227 years, Democrats decided to designate the Washington-Rochambeau Revolutionary Route as a National Historic Trail.

Did Congress really need to spend a whole legislative day debating this issue? Especially with gas over $4 a gallon and our country in need of increased American energy production?

Earlier this week, a top Democratic aide told The Hill newspaper: "Right now, our strategy on gas prices is "Drive small cars and wait for the wind."

Meanwhile, Republicans in the House are working hard on energy solutions. We have introduced legislation to drill in places like Alaska and the Outer Continental Shelf and increase our refinery capacity.  My discharge petition for the No More Excuses Energy Act now has 154 signatures.

But instead of even debating these bills, Congress spent a day of legislative business on the Washington-Rochambeau Revolutionary Route National Historic Trail Designation Act and then adjourned for the week. Please keep pushing your legislators to hold an open debate on how to bring down gas prices and increase American energy production.

Would it not be appropriate to graph job losses with a timeline of legislation from Lansing.

With all do respect to those that say we all need to buy hybrids; go to the main drag on any street in any city in this state.  Look around at the cars driving by, and when you see that 1987 Astro Van with a mom and three kids in it, ask yourself:  Can she afford a 40k car that won't fit those kids?

Should we just write those people off?

A lot of folks in this state, good people, are just getting by, and don't have a condo in Saugatuck that they go to on the weekends and sip their lattes and talk about how to fix this energy crisis.  You know, with windmills and solar panels and brand new cars that don't run on good old fashioned gas.  They aren't in the "creative class", they are what's known as the "middle class".

Should we ruin over half this state so that you can feel good about yourself, driving your Subaru to an Obama rally to discuss the loss of union jobs and how the big three are falling apart?

That's what I've been blogging about.  Talked with Matt Lahr yesterday about Tim Walberg's discharge petition for an up down vote on the "no more excuses" energy package.  He confirmed your contempt about the US House wasting the day debating the name of the trail.  He also thought they had reached a plateau on the Discharge petition.  I had called Matt to see what he thought about a "gang" of bipartisan members looking to get something done about drilling, that I read about at Politico

I was concerned that the Republicans would cave in too easily without holding the Dems accountable.
Matt seemed resigned that nothing was going to get done this year.  I gave my little pep talk about Tim Walbergs pioneering efforts and Boehner's efforts and keeping strong.
We both agreed that it was a positive sign that some Democrats were now willing to drill.  I reitterated my view about not getting enough in return in the compromise, and left it at that. Since our talk, I see that Bush has come down hard in favor of drilling.  Maybe that will force the issue this year  McCain has also started (finally) to come up with a more comprehensive energy talk. It's about time he is stepping up to the plate and acting like a leader.  It's a heaven sent issue, all the groundwork has been done for him, and it's been dropped in his lap,  even George picked up on that. I guess George saw the PEW poll.  I hope McCain does something with this.  We'll see.

With the day wasted on the naming of the Trail, its a wonder that they can even find 9% that think the Congress is doing a good job.  Well I guess everybody even legislators have families.

Did you see the new platform website for the Republicans.  I found it really not user friendly.  My post didn't go thru.  The search feature on days and subjects doesn't work.  Hope they at least get the kinks out quick, like before the convention.  Good PR maybe but little else.
