My Prayer - Perhaps A Psalm

Written during the night of the big storm in Grand Rapids - July 02/03, 2008

Lord, Heavenly Father, how awesome is your control over nature!  You bring the sun and rain, heat and wind, day and night, each at its appointed time.  You open the heavens for a moment, and display a measure of your wrath that the wise may see and take warning, that the simple may behold and gain knowledge.  You place limits on the malicious behavior of men, ordaining that they do not go past the boundaries you have already set.

In my anger I have sinned.  I have demanded answers from you that were to my liking, not caring whether those answers were according to your desire or not.  I have harbored evil intentions in my heart, forgetting your instruction to leave matters of vengeance to you.  Forgive me for my own arrogance; surely you know what is best, and I am an idiot for daring to challenge you.

The thief who broke into my car two nights ago stole only my travel mug; the damage could have been much worse.  Even though I justly consider myself violated (especially since I have owned that mug for ten years), it is a thing that can be replaced - not so easily some other things that could have been stolen.  Bring down on his head your wrath; make him pay the full consequence of his trespass.

This state home for veterans wants more of my money than should be their fair share; they would force me to choose between institutionalization and destitution.  See how they treat all who live here, warriors who have sacrificed blood and breath to protect their government's right to act as a collection of fools.  Bring down on their necks the penalty for their greed; do not allow them to make me homeless, or rob me of my ability to become productive again.  Provide me with a deliverer who will take up the sword for my cause, benefactors who will help me pay a debt I should not owe.

See how Satan has confused the thinking of the voters in Michigan!  Right now the only three initiatives that have a visible chance at ballot space will not benefit us at all; instead they will continue to work to our ruin.  But all of the initiatives that would truly help us cannot gain enough momentum; they are perishing for lack of support.  Do not leave us defenseless; act for the sake of the righteous!  Accomplish through the Secretary and the Legislature what we could not through the petition.

But perhaps it is your will that we suffer for a little while; because of our pride and arrogance we certainly deserve it.  We have allowed our streets to be bathed in the blood of our own children; you intend to bless us in spite of our sins, but we sacrifice your grace so that we can continue in our sinful folly.  We allow our government to oppress and exploit both employer and worker alike; those you intend to be a channel for your blessings we permit to increase the ranks of the poor.  Surely it is only because of your unending mercy that we are not yet consumed; because of your patient love you withhold the full measure of your wrath for a time.

Fools will never listen to instruction or accept teaching; though beaten with a clue-by-four a hundred times, they will always despise you.  A wise man who sees what is wrong and does not act is worse than a fool, because he treats knowledge with contempt.  Hoist the wicked on their own petard; bring into the laps of those who mock you the full measure of their own rebellion.  But shelter, train, and refine the faithful among us; preserve your saints so that we can right things when your timetable decrees it.

Because of your Son you do not treat me as my sinful stupidity deserves; you have written off my debt as paid, and cast my transgressions behind your back forever.  Grant me your peace to accept that which you have placed outside my ability to change.  Grant me the means and motivation to act on that which you have placed within my circle of influence.  Grant me sword and pen, speech and action, and silence when appropriate, so that I may do or say the right thing, at the right time, in the right measure, and for the right reason, and thus obtain the results that are pleasing in your sight.
