RMGN's cosmetics save taxpayers a whopping four cents a week!

The Mackinac Center continues their top-notch work on the extremist Reform Michigan Government Now petition scheme being advanced by Mark Brewer, John Cherry and Jennifer Granholm.  RMGN's all-Democratic slate of proponents continue to pretend theirs' is a change designed to cut government spending.

Well, the folks at the Mackinac Center have taken all of the constitutional changes in the eight-page, twelve column, fine print laden document and affixed actual, 2008 budgetary numbers to them to figure out exactly how much the Democratic takeover will "save" taxpayers.

The total savings from all these legislative and judiciary changes would be approximately $21 million annually. Michigan's state budget for the current fiscal year is $42.9 billion. So the potential savings come to 0.049 percent of the budget, or a bit less than of five-hundredths of 1 percent. The reduction in state government's approximately 56,000-member workforce would be 0.07 percent -- seven-hundredths of 1 percent. This "downsizing" would be less than 5 percent of just the increase in next year's Department of Community Health budget...

...at most RMGN would save each Michigan resident just 4 pennies a week. Even if one ignores recently revealed insider documents explaining that the measure's real purpose is to prevent future "budget cuts," these savings amount to little more than a rounding error in the $42.9 billion state budget -- a spending reduction of less than one-twentieth of 1 percent.

Check out the article itself for a detailed item by item breakdown of the "savings."

Of course, what the Mackinac Center is technically incapable of calculating is what Democratic control of all three branches of government (via fiat, not elections) will wind up COSTING taxpayers in the form of lost jobs and tax and fee hikes.

They only controlled two branches last year and they rammed through a $1.5 billion tax hike.  Take away the stop gap of the GOP Senate and how much higher do you think that would have been?

Never mind the fact that the proposal fails to address any one of dozens of substantive, common sense, bipartisan changes in government that would individually save as much ore more than every one of the surface-level changes it actually enacts.  Saving taxpayers cash isn't really the point of RMGN.  But we knew that the minute the UAW used union dues to post the extremists' PowerPoint on the web.

Let me get this right... the $1.5 billion tax hike last year cost each Michigan resident an additional $150 EACH in taxes... and RMGN will "save" $2.08 per year? What a great deal!

When you say "dozens of substantive, common sense, bipartisan changes in government that would individually save as much"  could you list them.  Being a goof, and having to work a real job every day, I just don't have the time (or ability) to track all the cost cutting bills proposed.

Could you give me, say the top 5?
