Urgent Action Alert: An Hour or Two to Change the World

Obama 43, McCain 42, Undecided 10.  Toss in a little Ralph Nader / Bob Barr action and you get to 100.  That's the latest word from Bernie Porn and the Democrats favorite opinion research outfit, EPIC /MRA.  The survey, published late yesterday morning by the Associated Press confirms for us what we non-kool-aid drinkers have known since the end of the primaries... this thing is close here in Michigan.

This despite unprecedented (rapturously) positive media coverage for the Senator Obama, unparalleled negative ("gotcha") media coverage of Governor Palin and a year and a half of voters being told that the race was effectively over.

Less glamorous but also critically important is what the pro-GOP shift enables the Party to do in local elections.  Congressmen Joe Knollenberg and Tim Walberg continue to outpoll their Democratic rivals, despite unending cash and undetectable scruples from their opponents and the Michigan House of Representatives, which most pundits figured to shift six or eight seats deeper into Dem control suddenly looks less bleak.

We have an opportunity.  We have forty-four days.  What are we going to do with them?

If you'll allow me to make a simple suggestion... DO SOMETHING!  Anything even.

Let's consider this an official Urgent Action Alert for the RightMichigan blogging community.  We've gotten pretty good at sitting behind our computers and discussing the issues that matter to us and that's more important than many people recognize... but now is the time for all hands on deck.  It's time to register a voter.  To spend an afternoon going door-to-door.  To drop-off yard signs for every Republican in your precinct.  To devote an evening to a local candidate's phone bank.

    Read on...

On that first note, time's running short.  Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land reminds us in the Ivory Tower that R-Day is upon us:

Register to vote: The registration deadline for the Nov. 4 election is Monday, Oct. 6. Stop by any Secretary of State office, visit your city or township clerk, or download the mail-in application from the Michigan Voter Information Center at www.Michigan.gov/vote.

On the second, third and fourth points, let's not get left out in the cold.  Join the shin-dig!  The Detroit News reports:

McCain's regional communications director Sarah Lenti said his campaign tries to appeal to the entire voting public, not just certain segments. Young volunteers have been drawn to the campaign to help with phone-banking and campaign events in large numbers, Lenti said.

"Every vote counts. Every age counts. Every person counts in this election," Lenti said. "Young people like McCain because he is a maverick. He respects the youth so much that he goes so far as to ask them to ask something more of themselves."

And I'm going to join him.

HERE you'll find a list of official Michigan McCain / Palin Victory Centers everywhere from Ann Arbor to Wyandotte.  They have activities, phone banks, mailings, door-to-door efforts and voter registration drives going on seven days a week throughout the rest of the campaign.

If you'd rather get connected locally, find your state House candidate and volunteer with him or her.

    Here is the challenge:

Pick one day between September 22 (today) and September 27 (this Saturday) to volunteer at least an hour helping the conservative candidate of your choice.

Click that list of offices to help McCain / Palin or find your local candidate.  No excuses.  The only way we pull this thing out... the only way we turn Michigan red is if we push ourselves a little bit further than we've pushed before.

That might mean rearranging our schedules.  That might mean skipping a trip to the movie theatre.  That might mean one fewer evening at the bar or the pizzeria.  That might mean one earlier-than-normal Saturday morning.  But the stakes demand nothing less than our best.  Our best really can win this thing.

And in my experience, a little public commitment goes a long way.  To that end, please email me at RightMichigan@gmail.com or leave a comment after this post letting everyone know what day / time(ish) and location you plan on volunteering at this week.  If you can make the time someone will be organizing an event near you.  Guaranteed.

    Fire up team!

    Time to lead by example...

On Thursday from 5:30 to 8:30 I'm going to swing out to the Michigan Candidate Campaign Center in Jenison.  They're hosting a pizza party / phone bank to help Dan Tietema, the conservative candidate running against renowned tax-hiker Robert Dean here in the 75th House District.

Better yet, I'm even going to bring a friend.

If you're a part of the Facebook generation, you can check out the details on this event HERE, otherwise, if you're interested in joining me at this one let me know and I'll make sure you've got all of the information!

    Thanks (none / 0) (#2)

for the pep talk, all the info, and encouragement.

Last year I took someone to register to vote.  They've gone with me to vote.  She had never voted before.

This year I'm concerned with another unregistered.  I also am concerned with a person who is registered but has never voted because they don't feel it will make a difference.

I'm glad of the reminder of how important this is and will step up my game.  I pray for wisdom.

I'm thankful that MI will show it's disgust with the Dems in Nov. and believe the rest of the nation will also.

Again, thank you for all your efforts, Nick.  God bless you!

And the BEST thing is (none / 0) (#3)

The Best thing about volunteering is you meet so many other new people that share your ideas and values.

Given the MSN and liberal newspapers and Hollywood/TV - it is great to meet new people who want to support the same party and the same candidates that you do.

I volunteer alot and have met some of my best friends through the GOP.  Even now - just mention Palin - and people just perk up and start talking.  It is great energy.

Lastly, knowing that it takes effort and being part of the fight is rewarding as well - the time YOU give and the actions YOU take - YOU will not forget!  Volunteers do not regret campaigns - even if they don't end up positive.  On the other hand, if your candidate does not cross the victory line and you stayed home that election cycle, you can blame yourself for not being part of the team.

Let's join up - Get out - Knock on a door - Make a few calls (some Victory Centers have advanced phones and calling has never been easier) - Register a voter (7 million voter aged in Michigan - only 2 million will vote.) -  Deliver a yardsign - Talk up a candidate at a meeting/church - Put a bumper sticker on you car (they can come off in a few weeks) - bake cookies for other volnteers (Ann Arbor VC is getting some cookie love :)

There are a handful of battle states -if the GOP takes MICHIGAN, we win the white house - it is that simple.  The opponent knows this and is actually bringing in folks from out of state to volunteer.

Register by OCT 5th - Vote NOV 4th.

Stand up for the GOP! Stand up for MICHIGAN!

    WHAT SAY YOU!

I don't understand how the MSM and certain Liberal types in this state think that it will be another Democrat year. I for one would think that after a record tax increase, now giving a near monopoly to the energy companies that will see serious increases in energy bills for all of Michigan's already struggling families and has given us a two year long soap opera in Detroit that continues after a short station break that the folks here in Michigan would be not only fed up but replused by the Democrat message. We have a State Government that bloated, out of control with it's spending and a Governor who has failed time and again to show leadership and ability but has taken the tired old Liberal playbook and taken the easy way out of every crisis she has faced. It is far from a time to employ more Democrat Socialist's in Lansing so they might further the aims of Nanny state Socialism but to show those that have ruined the economy, forced residents and employers to flee this state in record numbers the door. Let us introduce them to hard times and unemployment. Let them be forced to leave the state they were born in because of a Carpetbagging Canadian that embraces Canadian Socialist ideas. The time in 2008 is to clean house. Take Michigan back from the brink and return adults to Lansing. Let us send a Conservatives to Washington DC to help Conservatives regain control of the Congress. The current Congress is the most despised Congress in history. The Congress of Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid has a 9% approval rating. They have shown incredible incompetence and lack of leadership and judgement. Record oil prices and prices at the pump, the current economic scandle, one scandle involving Democrats after another. The party of Treason and Corruption must be sent packing for the people of this great Republic to regain direction and have leadership that we can have confidence in.
The experts are normally wrong. So let them be wrong this year. I have heard since January that this would be a Democrat year. Let us show the experts once more that taking polls in New York and California does not give an accurate picture of the truth. Let us vote once again for Freedom and Liberty instead of Socialism and oppression. It is ours to choose and we must choose wisely.

    Thanks for all the information!

I am on the volunteer list for Women for McCain and Catholics for McCain. I'm hoping to get called into duty soon in my area! (I don't live in Michigan yet... I'll be moving there hopefully when we call McCain President McCain)

But I live in a state where the race is tight as well but things look favorable for McCain. In a highly democratic state, McCain's only been behind by a few points, and we still have undecideds that could push it in his favor.

While I wait for the call to duty, I've put signs in my yard, on my car, I wear my NObama, Proud Republican and McCain*Palin t-shirts everywhere I go.

I'm excited by how many people (my age (32 tomorrow) and younger) stop me to give me a thumbs up, or show me their Proud Republican T-shirts, or to tell me how good it is to see another McCain backer.

I also get young people asking why I'd vote for McCain over Obama, and I give them pages worth of reasons, 2 I met a week ago said they'd look into what I told them, we exchanged emails and they emailed me that they've changed their vote from Obama to McCain, while the rest, whether they change or not, are left with something to think about.

    I blog as well. http://politics2008myview.blogspot.com/

I do whatever I can to spread the word. McCain and Palin are our only hope to get America back on track. If Obama gets in office, it could be disasterious. I'd say I'd move to Canada, but they don't seem to like conservative Americans any better there. lol!

    So We need McCain*Palin '08!!

This is very very good news. (none / 0) (#7)

The polls are looking good, and the base is very jazzed. This is looking great. It doesn't really take much of an effort. Just and extra little bit of time could mean that the next 4 years will look brighter.

And the extra pay-off is setting future VP Palin up for a much easier run for the Presidency. And that is worth all the effort that we can muster.
