Calling the Trolls to the Mat

    By Nick, Section News

I'm only going to say this once... this is a blogging community and we're all about open discourse.  That's why so many trolls have been tolerated for so long.

But like Uncle Ben told Peter Parker, with great power comes great responsibility.  The responsibility of the left on this site is to actually participate in discussion, not just toss out MDP talking points.  There are a dozen lefty blogs where you can post those.  This is not the forum.

So if you are asked a question, called to task to provide documentation, asked to back up your claims with links etc DO SO.  Otherwise you're not part of a conversation, you're just red faced and screaming.  And you will no longer be welcome.

    Consider yourselves warned.

    That is all.

    Okay, I have to ask. (none / 0) (#1)

Not being a computer geek to any degree. I have to ask at the risk of sounding like an idiot. What is a troll? Other then the mythical definition or the one that is used for those who live in Michigan's lower Penninsula I am at a loss. How about an explanation if you please? Oh and I guess some fisherman use that technique to attract fish. Beyond that ????

One difficulty to deal with.. (none / 0) (#7)

..is that there are normally more than two sides to every issue. It is simple to label every thought as being black-white, lefty-righty, conservative-liberal and to draw a line in the dirt between them.

That also seems to me to be an excellent recipe for confrontation.

If I label myself as a Republican, does that mean that I have to agree to all of the gang rules and become Pro-Life, Pro-Death, cut funding for education, increase regulation, attack Muslims, store an arsenal of nukes, etc. or do I get a chance to voice an objection to a few things that I consider playground antics and self-serving and possibly even dangerous?

If I choose instead to wear a Democrat label do I have to blacken my face, come out of the closet, advocate mercy killings and abortions, turn over my budget to the U.N., and memorize Cum-ba-ja?

To be honest, I find both gangs childish and fraudulent, self-serving and fraught with cheap rhetoric. Perhaps we could rise above that and think for ourselves.

Just before opening the trap-door, recommend a blog that is respectful and dignified.

    gracias.

I really wish they'd cut funding to education; then perhaps I'd feel more comfortable in voting for them each election.

Under Republican presidents, especially ones who promised to get rid of the Dept. of Education, the education budgets have grown. Those are facts.

. . . as politics goes, it's not exactly an oversimplified left-right scale, though the MSM does love to portray is as such.

As this little quiz shows, the political overviews are more of a cross-index, in which Libertarians, Statists, Leftist-Liberals, Rightist-Conservatives, and Centrists are all pretty accurately identified.  But note that categorization doesn't say anything about you politically except what your overarching philosophical views are.

I'm a Centrist, and so are my two older children (as well as my daughter's boyfriend).  But even though we adhere to the philosophy that government intervention should be selective, the four of us differ as to when, why, and how that intervention should occur.

To pull just one example off your list, El Grillo, I suspect that there is going to be a variance in the view of the regulars here as to the application of the death penalty.  Likewise with School Choice, Right to Work, fair faxation, GWOT, civil rights, gay rights, and Right to Life.  Even where we generally agree, there may be diversity in specifics.

The only thing that Nick -- and the rest of the regulars -- demand, even of themselves, is that the debate stay on topic and remain confined to sound logical arguments using traceable evidentiary support.  In all fairness, I have myself been called on Nick's carpet for going a little overboard in opposing RMGN (the issue, not the poster).  We all allow each other to be human, which means we deal appropriately with honest mistakes, but we're not going to countenance stupidity.

An end to silliness. Yea Nick! (none / 0) (#13)

El Grillo makes a great example of what a troll does. He is arguing and throwing in reasons why what Nick wrote is unreasonable. It's off topic and we can see that an attempt is made to make us feel guilty and to wonder if we should explain our stance to Grillo. Either that or there was a bad case of stupid going around and it's contagious. There is a lot of silliness going on with the main stream media and the Dems, as usual. I think "it's all good" for the Maverick. The double standards, meanness, and the rest of the games have gotten old for most. That's why the heads rolled at NBC. If a lot of people were not fed up with the biased media they would have kept on lying while others swear to it. Just like they do while breathing down the neck of our soldiers. I'm feeling very happy.

El Grillo complains that no one was up to the task of discussing the issues, but it seems that it was El Grillo that wasn't up to answering people who challenged him. I posted here:

    http://www.rightmichigan.com/comments/2008/9/8/16415/30363/3#3

concerning comments made about oil and gas, and "the automobile culture" that we supposedly have (ahd should feel sorry for) in our country. He never responded. That's the thing - he hasn't actually engaged in any discourse, at least not that I have seen.

Better luck next time, and as KRH pointed out - moderates, libertarians, centrists, neo-conservatives and paleoconservatives all have found a way to discuss the issues around here. It only seems to be liberals who don't like discussing issues, but merely muddying the waters and trolling.
