Day one of Obama's first term brings return of the PC policeBy Nick, Section News
I'm a proud graduate of the Grand Rapids Public Schools (in fact, I just mentioned it in the comments section of another post). Ottawa Hills High School, Class of 1997. Yeah, I'm getting old but that's not where I was going with this. When I graduated, when my uncle graduated a generation earlier and when my grandfather graduated from OHHS back around the first quarter of the 20th century, we were the Ottawa Hills Indians. Big, awesome Indian Chief for a mascot and excessive use of the bass drum during football half-time shows and pep rallies but there was no face painting, no feathered-head-dresses worn on the sidelines, no yalping and slapping hands against open mouths like in the old movies. The mascot wasn't a big red faced goof like the Cleveland Indians in Major League Baseball. It was a respectful, awesome representation of a noble looking Chief. Five or six years ago, though, someone got a bee in their bonnet and decided that an Indian shouldn't be any team's mascot. Now, granted, no one complains about mascots like the "Raiders" or the "Rebels" or the "Buccaneers" or the "Lakers" or the "Cowboys" any of the other mascots based on people, but "Indians" was just too offensive to Native Americans. Or something. These days the team mascot is a Bengal tiger. The Ottawa Hills Bengals. Blech. Doesn't work for me, but I digress. If someone thinks the term "Indian" is offensive I suppose that's his or her beef. The story out of the east side of the state this morning is a little less easy to justify. The Ivory Tower reports that Wyandotte Roosevelt's marching band, the "Marching Chiefs" and the only Michigan band invited to perform at Barack Obama's inaugural in two weeks, is going to do a bit of self censoring to hide their own "Indian" mascot.
The band is covering up for the day in response to a letter from Harvey Gunderson, president of Religious Americans Against Indian Nicknames and Logos, who protested the nickname of The Chiefs. No word on whether or not Gunderson sent himself a letter protesting his use of the very un-PC term "Indian." I think the proper phraseology these days is "Native American," Harvey. It is unclear whether the letter was sent to the school or to the inaugural committee. In other words, they're going to sew some patches on their sleeves but we don't know if its because of some hypocrite named Harvey or because the Obama folks went into PC overdrive. Either way, the band director tells the fish-wrap that they just don't want to bring any negative publicity to the inaugural. Aww, how sweet of him. I know that when I see a respectful, noble representation of regional icons (the mascot is named after Chief Walks-in-the-Water from the Wyandot tribe of Huron Indians) I immediately think "uh-oh, negative publicity." Read on...
But I suppose in the realm of ugly news this sort of PC nonsense really barely registers. Compare a one-day patch on a sleeve with the massive patch the state budget is going to need for the next year and you forget all about semantics pretty quickly.
Oh, and that patch, its needed because revenues are way down despite the massive, record shattering Democratic tax hike of 2007. We were promised $1.5 billion in new taxes would erase budget deficits forever and that we'd never see the need for another tax hike again. Funny thing, though, when you swipe that much cash from the bank accounts of job makers... they make fewer jobs, fewer moms and dads provide for their families, more families leave the state or rely on government assistance and tax revenue plummets. Here we are again and with a revenue estimating conference taking place tomorrow the over-under on the new deficit looks to be about a BILLION dollars. The Associated Press reports:
Senate Fiscal Agency economists expect an even bigger shortfall, with the state bringing in $941 million less for its general and school aid funds that predicted. The biggest hit could be to the $9.4 billion general fund, which it estimates could take in $1.1 billion less than the past fiscal year...
The SFA report warned that, "absent additional revenue, very significant reductions will have to be made in the ... (general fund) appropriations." Ah, magical words. Additional revenue. Grab those wallets and hold on tight because here come the Democrats again. Besides, if they don't raise taxes again how are they going to be able to pay for the extra employees and infrastructure they need to handle the ginormous new influx of laid off Michiganders at unemployment offices? The Detroit News reports:
State officials admit they've got their work cut out for them. They're missing possibly hundreds of thousands of calls each day from jobless Michiganians seeking unemployment benefits, because they can't keep up with the crush.
Only about 11,000 callers are getting through to unemployment claims processors each day via phone, while the vast majority of callers get no more than a recorded message informing them that "all circuits are busy now." At least somebody's hiring.
