  • Your New Scoop Site

    Welcome to Scoop!

To help you figure things out, there is a Scoop Admin Guide which can hopefully answer most of your questions.

    Some tips:

    • Most of the layout is changed in "Blocks", found in the admin tools menu
    • Features can be turned on and off, and configured, in "Site Controls" in the admin tools menu
    • Stories have an "edit" link right beside the "Full Story" link on an index page, and right beside the "Post a Comment" link on the full story page. They can also be edited by clicking the story title in the "Story List" admin tool
    • Boxes are what allow you to write new features for Scoop; they require a knowledge of the perl programming language to work with effectively, although you can often make small changes without knowing much perl. If you would like a feature added but cannot program it yourself, ScoopHost does custom Scoop programming as one of its services.
    • If you aren't sure where to look for a particular feature or piece of display, try the "Search Admin Tools" link in the admin tools menu.

    ScoopHost.com is currently running Scoop version scoop-1_1-dev from 2006/08/26 20:02:04 .

BREAKING: Cherry out of gubernatorial race

For the latest, follow RightMichigan.com contributor Dennis Lennox on Twitter.

Lieutenant Governor John Cherry ended his gubernatorial campaign with an announcement at noon.

Veteran Capitol reporter Tim Skubick, via WLNS and MIRS first reported the news, followed by RightMichigan.com overnight.

Cherry's decision comes in the wake of months of internal and public polling that indicates all major Republican candidates beat or come close to beating Governor Jennifer Granholm's heir-apparent.

With Cherry's departure, the Democratic Party primary for governor is wide-open. House Speaker Andy Dillon may run if the Democrats can cope with a nominally pro-life candidate.

Most recently, a Rasmussen poll conducted for Detroit-based WJBK (FOX 2) reported Cherry lost to Congressman Pete Hoekstra by 14 points, Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard by 10 points and Attorney General Mike Cox by 6 points.

Cherry's favorable rating of 35 percent is also dismal, while Hoekstra has a 50-26 percent favorable/unfavorable rating.

It's also an early sign that the White House wants to avoid a repeat of 2009 when Republicans picked up the governor mansions in New Jersey and Virginia.

This also means Cherry realized he can't escape his dismissal record as the governor's helpmate for the past seven years; a period of time that saw one family leave Michigan every 12 minutes for a brighter future.

It's a record of failed leadership -- including the Granholm-Cherry-Dillon tax increase of 2007 that put the final nail in the coffin of businesses on main streets across Michigan.

It's a record of a broken state with the worst economy in the country, crumbling infrastructure, struggling schools and cash-strapped local governments.

Most importantly, it's a record that can't be defended.

Michigan has waived goodbye to her future. She has lost too many future doctors, scientists, engineers, job-creators, teachers and innovators because of Granholm and Cherry.

Argus pushing for consitutional convention in 2010

There's been a push for a constitutional convention (con-con) by a small, but influential group of Lansing elites and their followers. This has been going on for the last three years. I'm strongly opposed to opening Pandora's Box here. The Argus fails to make a solid case for it here. In fact this is one of the sloppiest editorials I've ever seen from the Argus

Some background - I've been aware of the con-con push since December of 2006, almost exactly three years ago.

Heads up! Property Tax Raisers want to change Michigan's Constitution and eliminate safeguards - 12-13-2006

This group of Lansing insiders, elitists, and termed out legislators (Frank Kelley, Joe Schwarz, Harry Gast, Phil Power, Debbie Dingell, and John Hertel) had their agenda they wanted to push. They did not like constitutional amendments, Headlee's protection on property taxes, term limits (I agree with that aspect), give the governor much more power, raise taxes, eliminate recalls, and end elections of judges and university trustees. That was as of 2006.

Poll Identifies Bishop as Strongest Candidate for Attorney General

In a poll released this week, Senator Mike Bishop was the only candidate who chalked up a decisive victory in a hypothetical General Election match-up against newly announced Democratic     Attorney General candidate Gretchen Whitmer.

Bishop also led opponent Bill Schuette amongst those that identified themselves as Republicans, as well as those identified as Independents.

"Republicans need to nominate the strongest possible candidate in 2010 if it wants to elect a GOP attorney general. Mike Bishop begins the race with a 10% lead over a woman Democrat, while Bill Schuette is only tied with her," Steve Mitchell said recently regarding the results. "In a close race, having the lead Bishop has right now could be the difference between winning and losing next year."

Rocky for Congress - 9th District

We have some good news in the 9th District. Rocky Raczkowski is running against Gary Peters. Rocky's a good candidate who has a history of winning tough races. He won three times in Farmington Hills against democrats in a democrat leaning district won by Gore, Kerry, and Obama. He even beat Aldo Vagnozzi, who later won the district three times himself.

I was at the Rocky announcement yesterday in Oakland County. The turnout surprised me. I saw roughly 250 people there, on a Saturday morning, less than an hour before a football game. A lot of the people I talked to there wern't the people I normally see at Oakland County political events. I'm more familiar with NORC, but a lot of people there are just now getting politically active. They are unhappy with the job Washington is doing, including Gary Peters, who supports retroactive tax increases, stimulus packages that only help government, bailouts, cap and trade, and the governmental health care takeover.
