    Welcome to Scoop!

To help you figure things out, there is a Scoop Admin Guide which can hopefully answer most of your questions.

    Some tips:

    • Most of the layout is changed in "Blocks", found in the admin tools menu
    • Features can be turned on and off, and configured, in "Site Controls" in the admin tools menu
    • Stories have an "edit" link right beside the "Full Story" link on an index page, and right beside the "Post a Comment" link on the full story page. They can also be edited by clicking the story title in the "Story List" admin tool
    • Boxes are what allow you to write new features for Scoop; they require a knowledge of the perl programming language to work with effectively, although you can often make small changes without knowing much perl. If you would like a feature added but cannot program it yourself, ScoopHost does custom Scoop programming as one of its services.
    • If you aren't sure where to look for a particular feature or piece of display, try the "Search Admin Tools" link in the admin tools menu.

Urgent Action Alert: Do Dillon and Cherry support Dems' radical ANTI-CHOICE legislation?

"We don't think a pharmacist should sit in judgment on a prescription a doctor has prescribed and that is in their patient's best interests," Dem State Representative Rebekah Warren recently told a pro-abortion online resource publication.

An early contender for the "most patently ridiculous quote of the year," Warren's embarrassing  attempt at quasi-ethical faux-reason was, apparently, an attempt to rationalize her support for House Bill 5164, legislation that ignores longstanding, bipartisan state and national standards and legally forces pharmacists to fill prescriptions for the "abortion pill" despite personal, moral or religious objections.

The bill is cosponsored by twenty-three other House Democrats.

Currently, health care workers, including the good folks who after a badly skinned knee fill the prescription for your child's antibiotics, are legally entitled to refuse to participate in procedures they object to ethically.  Like, say, killing kids.

That's not sitting "in judgment" of a doctor and a patient.  That's sitting in judgment of one's own conscience and actions, Representative.

Unfortunately, that's not even the most insidious legislation just introduced by members of a political Party beholden above everything else to the multi-billion dollar abortion-on-demand industry.

Warren and twenty other House Democrats have also introduced House Bill 5158, effectively designed to drive crisis pregnancy centers out of business. The legislation creates fresh regulation that mandates each and every non-profit CPC in the state provide, in writing, information about where and how to acquire an abortion, including directions showing pregnant women how to get to the abortion clinic.

The real irony in all of this is just how patently ANTI-CHOICE each of these bills is.  Eliminating pharmacists' choice on whether or not to physically participate in a procedure they may consider anything from mildly objectionable to a mortal sin, all via government mandate and the threat of force doesn't exactly promote that whole "liberty" concept.

Meanwhile, the Crisis Pregnancy Center legislation is inarguably designed to force pro-life organizations to permanently close their doors, leaving hurting women with only one option... pro-abortion Planned Parenthood.

Each of the bills has been referred to the House Judiciary committee, chaired by Democrat Mark Meadows.  Meadows is the primary sponsor on the anti-CPC bill and a co-sponsor on the pharmacists-as-abortionists mandate.  We know where he stands.

There are two prominent Michigan Democrats whose opinion we still don't know, though.

House Speaker Andy Dillon, a man who has been endorsed by Michigan Right to Life in cycles past and one who is rumored to be considering a run at the Governor's office next year, has not commented publicly on the bills making their way through his chamber.

Similarly, Lieutenant Governor and 2010 Gubernatorial candidate John Cherry has been silent on his party's pro-abortion, anti-choice legislation.

Michigan voters have a right to know where each of them stand.

Three listings follow.  No excuses.  Please find five minutes today... right now, on your lunch break, on the road in between meetings... whenever... and drop an email and CALL Mark Meadows, John Cherry and Andy Dillon.

Tell them what YOU think about the Democrats' anti-choice legislation, ask Meadows and Dillon to stop the insanity before it reaches the House floor and ask Andy Dillon and John Cherry whether or not they support their Party's shockingly anti-choice legislation, HBs 5158 and 5164.

Then swing back by and let everyone know what they said!

Putting your money and my bike where our mouths are... again!

Everybody was so awesome last year I figured I'd try it again.  I hope you'll thoughtfully... dare I say PRAYERFULLY consider breaking out your checkbooks right now and get ready to put them to use once you've finished reading this post...

One question immediately pops to the minds of observers whose eyes are fixed on Washington, DC where President Obama's first nominee to the United States Supreme Court prepares for nomination hearings.  As much as many would like to pretend the issue doesn't exist or is no longer important, the battle over abortion rages across the country this week in ways it hasn't for years.

Me?  I think babies are cute and killing them is mean.  42 percent of the nation disagrees to one degree or another, but even most of them would admit, when pushed, that it's best to avoid killing kids whenever possible.

One of the organizations making it possible, saving kids' lives and caring for their mothers is Grand Rapids based Alpha Women's Center.  Their website states:

"As a community center Alpha exists to be a vehicle for bringing the spiritual and material resources of the local church and our community to bear on the needs of men, women and their babies, born and unborn, and by extension, their families."

    Their website is too humble.

Alpha provides free pregnancy testing and counseling, abortion alternative counseling, post abortion counseling, referrals for adoption and medical services, they help women secure housing, provide prenatal and post-natal parenting classes and make sexual integrity presentations for schools and youth groups.  And that's the short list.

They're a non-profit on the ground meeting women where they live and helping them when they need it.  But they can't do it without our help.  Unlike taxpayer funded state services Alpha is an organization run entirely on donations.  Enter: Us.

The women's center raises 20% of their annual donations during one early summer event each year... the Life Walk.  It's a great event and a ton of fun.  They put on a big breakfast, offer a walk, run and a bike ride option and make a day out of it.

Guess who's participating again this year!

On Saturday June 20, about three weeks from now, I'll grease up the chain, make sure the tires are inflated and embark on the bike portion of the fundraiser.  And because I'm crazy enough to have a ton of faith in my pro-life friends across the State I'm setting a relatively big goal.

Last year the Right Roots raised over $1,500 through this event!  Unfortunately, Michigan's economy remains trapped in a death spiral and belts continue to be tightened.  With that in mind, I'm going to set a high but hopefully reachable goal, based on our track record.  Will you sponsor my ride to help me raise $1,000?

Leave a comment after this post or if you'd prefer a little anonymity shoot me an email at RightMichigan@gmail.com.  Let me know if you can sponsor me for $10, $20, $50 or even $100.

And if you'd like to participate yourself, check out Alpha's website HERE!

(Note: Sponsoring the Life Walk won't get you extra credit in the Bloggers Challenge, but it miiiiight get you extra credit in eternity...)

A few notes on Rick Snyder's various (and varied) responses

What's up, team... a few notes, for the sake of clarity and due diligence:

    1) Lansing insider publication MIRS approached Snyder yesterday to ask about his position on life issues.  Snyder declined to speak with MIRS and sent his spokesman to address these issues instead.  So to speak.  According to MIRS:

Waters declined to give Snyder's position on the Michigan Business Tax (MBT), the MBT surcharge or the state budget. He also declined to state if his boss is pro-choice or pro-life.

"As you can imagine, he has very strong opinions on issues, but he's at the listening phase right now," Waters said. "He's interested in hearing what the citizens have to say."

    2) I personally approached the Snyder campaign directly through John Yob and requested an interview after Yob claimed my "moderate" claims were off-base.

Mr. Snyder through Mr. Yob declined the opportunity.

    3) Instead, Snyder ostensibly granted an interview to Jerry Zandstra, a former candidate in the GOP Senate Primary in 2006.

    4) Worth noting that Snyder and Zandstra are both current or former Yob clients.  The "interview" was coordinated by John.

    5) I find it more than a little curious that Zandstra didn't ask the candidate about his political giving, the basis of pro-lifers' criticism.

Mr. Snyder has not addressed his donation history.

    Specifically:

-Why has he chosen to give thousands of dollars to a Democratic Congressman?

-Why was his only political giving in 2008 a giant check scribbled to Cure Michigan, a ballot campaign that supported 100% fatal, 100% obsoleted human experimentation?

-Why has he given big-bucks to the IMP-PAC, a political organization that exists for the sole purpose of building a pro-abortion wing in the Republican Party?

    6) I am, personally, disappointed that Jerry Zandstra, someone whose stand for life I've always appreciated, decided not to address the root issues.  But I'm just one guy.

    What do YOU think?

Online Discussion with Jerry Zandstra and Rick Snyder

    (Promoted by Nick...)

    RightMichigan -

I have not taken a position in the Governor's race.  I am a fan of Congressman Hoekstra and certainly know Mike Cox and Terri Land as well.
I do think that our state and our party are hungry for a leader with the ability to facilitate an environment that spurs economic development and job creation.   In terms of this type of experience, Rick Snyder is second to none.

I conducted the following online discussion with Rick Snyder and had the opportunity to talk with him about his position on the life issue.  Although his emphasis is clearly on fixing the economy, he is indeed pro-life and would likely meet the pro-life certification requirements of the Pro-Life Federation should he choose to apply.

I encourage your readers to give Rick the opportunity to present his views before rushing to judgment about his positions.  Michigan is hungry for a vision to turn this economy around and we might find that Rick is the candidate best able to lead our party and our state back from this mess that the Democrats created.

    Thanks,

    Dr. Jerry Zandstra
    President, Pro-Life Federation

Online discussion with Rick Snyder follows...

I can count on one hand the number of times in the last three years I've posted flyers and event announcements for third-party groups and organizations but every now and again there's something happening that's worth everyone's attention.

    Thus, and without further ado...

There's an exciting group of young pro-life professionals from BOTH parties in Michigan choosing public policy and politics as their career path these days. This is an awesome networking opportunity, whether you're a Republican or a Democrat, and a great cause, no matter your age or vocation.
