Under the wise leadership of Jennifer Granholm the state has determined the best way to flee its decade long depression is to make it more difficult for viable businesses to survive through punitive taxation and heightened regulations, in favor of making multimillion dollar tax credit deals with other companies who are willing to expand here, relocate here, or start up here.
Taking money away from struggling businesses to be used as a lure to attract speculative ventures is a tactic often questioned by naysayers such as the Rougman and his Mom. Many of the jobs promised by such deals are very slow to be created, some are never realized, while there are also measurable job losses as a result of increased taxation and regulation placed on existing employers and consumers. Another potential problem with any large grant or credit is the possibility of fraud. That is why due diligence has to be maintained at the state's end of the bargain to make certain that rare money resources aren't wasted on fly-by-night scam artists. Oops. I know a guy. He is a post commander for the Michigan State Police. During his last visit our conversation turned toward the construction of the new state police headquarters in Lansing. He was adamant that a majority of the policemen, as well as himself, were strongly opposed to the new building. He seemed to swear more often the longer we talked about it. The new building would be too small, too expensive, was driven by politics and not need, and was embarrassing for many of the officers because they feared they might be perceived as being in support of it. I think he swore again at that point. As far as he was concerned, it was a project being ramrodded through by a governor that had no idea what the needs of the MSP were. In 2006, Governor Jennifer Granholm went on statewide television and announced on behalf of the State of Michigan a promise to over 96,000 high school students now in college: if you pass a test called the Michigan Merit Exam, the State of Michigan will help fund your college education.
Notwithstanding the accuracy of standardized tests in measuring any area of performance, the Michigan Promise Scholarship, a four thousand dollar earned, merit-based grant awarded over the course of one's college career, was created to incentivize continued education and employment within the State of Michigan. But now, the opposite is occurring. As tax revenues decrease, politicians on both sides of the isle in Lansing have caved in to special interest pressure and prioritized political kickbacks and pork projects that would otherwise be used to fund the Promise Scholarship. When did it become an accepted theory that government has the ability to create jobs in much the same manner that my kid sister used to pop out cool multicolored extrusions with her Playdoh Fun Factory? Nowadays, progressively bent government operatives assume that if they throw enough proper ingredients into a bowl and add a little flowery sentiment, they can force the concoction through a die and out the other side will come a never ending stream of gainfully employed citizens. Push this button and that button, keep a foot on this pedal, push two levers, flip three switches, turn a dial, make a hand in the armpit farting noise, and voilà!, you have a job of tomorrow! In the same month that Barack Obama can win the Nobel Peace Prize I suppose I should not be surprised that the National Association of State Boards of Education has named Jennifer Granholm the Policy Leader of the Year.
I know that every Michigander is proud of the award bestowed upon our Dear Leader, without whom education in Michigan would be in horrible shape. It is, after all, under her leadership that Michigan's largest school district has had its graduation rate skyrocket to almost 30 percent. Under her leadership the robust Michigan economy has been able to exemplify the importance of progressive education funding. Hundreds of schools have closed, programs have been eliminated, and teachers have been laid off. Meanwhile to find work each year, many thousands of new college graduates must move to climes disadvantaged by far inferior chief executives. Michigan's governor sure knows a lot of things about education, she's just running out of people in-state to enlighten. (6 comments) Comments >> By DMOnline, Section News

Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm made an ass of herself on Fox News Sunday yesterday. Sorry to be so blunt but sometimes putting it simply is the best approach. Granholm decided that after she and her fellow Democrats running the state of Michigan have implemented policies causing the projected loss of 1 MILLION jobs in the state by the end of her 2 terms as governor, that she'd take on job creator, Steve Wynn (see the video here).
After Wynn explained how the government on a national level was failing miserably in creating an environment in which job creation could flourish, Granholm chastised the successful entrepreneur for being "simplistic." It's admirable that Wynn managed to keep his temper in check listening to blow-hard Granholm dismiss the private sector and singing the praises of a demonstrably failed and bloated government.
